The Farm Specialist will be responsible for supporting the activities of the Outside Farming Department. As a Farm Specialist , you will have the opportunity to work with leading technology and talented cross functional scientists seeking to deliver the very best vegetable crop genetics. This will involve overseeing and executing directives for the field operations teams. You will have the opportunity to develop your people leadership skills by supervising and motivating the farm operations teams. You will support the management of the farm resources to achieve successful field trials and trial seed productions.Responsibilities:Direct the daily labor and operations on our R&D farm.Supervises all contract labor (tractor drivers, irrigators, pest control operators) performing daily/seasonal operations that include field preparation, planting, weeding, irrigating, fertilization and seed harvest.Work with the Farm Manager to lead our contract labor in executing the daily general farming tasks.Ensures all necessary equipment, safety and environmental training is carried out as required by regulations and company policy.Manage general vehicle and equipment maintenance along with minor equipment repairs.Utilize and oversee the safe operation of field equipment such as planters, tractors, sprayers, forklifts, and trailers and champion Environmental, Safety, and Health (ESH) policies and proceduresApply pesticides as directed by the Farm Manager.Ability to effectively use computers and handheld data collection devices for record keeping, reports, spreadsheets, and field data. Attend further education seminars to keep the operation abreast of new technologies and safety requirements.Work with a variety of crop initiators to achieve crop goalsQualifications:Qualifications:Minimum of a BS degree plus 2 years of experience in an agriculture field.Bilingual (English/Spanish), conversational is required. Ability to work extended hours during peak operations periods, including weekends & holidays. Proficient in using computers including Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel). Extensive experience in the operation of general farm equipment. Ability to operate farm equipment and machinery.Basic understanding of farm equipment maintenance Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; also write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of organization.Ability to work outdoors in extreme conditions. Ability to operate a company vehicle and meet DOT background and physical requirements. Commercial drivers license (class A CDL), or the ability to obtain one.Pesticide applicators license, or the ability to obtain one.Ability to push, lift or pull up to 60 lbs. Desired skills /experienceExperience as a people manager .Knowledge of basic farm equipment maintenance also desired. Knowledge of farm equipment repairs, i.e., metal cutting, welding, etc.Mechanical knowledge.Knowledge of drip tape irrigation systems, i.e., filter systems, flow and psi water rates, irrigation system design.CPR certification, or the ability to obtain one.Apply for this job.
