Assistant Farm Manager
The Assistant Farm Manager will perform the duties of feeding and caring for all livestock on the dairy facility. The proper care of dairy animals involves keeping the animal areas, lots and barns clean and free from manure and extraneous objects. The job is to be performed in an efficient manner to allow the production of a high-quality product and promote animal well-being and comfort. Secondary responsibilities will include activities associated with the farm cropping enterprises and instructional support. This is a salaried position.??Duties & Responsibilities:Duties and Responsibilities: Management of the Dairy Herd in all phases of the dairy, including the following:1)?Ration preparation and feeding2)?Feeding, cleaning, and care of all animals at the agriculture center of excellence-calves, heifers, dairy cattle3)?Assist with milking duties4)?Upkeep of facilities, grounds, and equipment5)?Calving assistance6)?Assist in Heat detection and breeding7)?Maintain animal health and other records as necessary-such as herd health, reproduction, heat detection, animal ID, treatment, and animal care, etc.8)?Ordering supplies for farming operations9)?Be aware and follow conservation practices10)?Follow and update 590 nutrient management plan11)?Croppinga.?Plantingb.?Harvestingc.?Chemical Applicationsd.?Tillagee.?Machinery repair and selectionf.?Organizing, planning, planting, and harvesting of test plotsDetailed duties and responsibilitiesFeeding Responsibilities:1)?Practice humane animal handling practices at all times.2)?Check all animals on a timely basis to be certain they are receiving adequate feed.3)?Be certain clean water and feed is available per protocol4)?Entire farm must be tour ready at all times-be certain areas are cleaned daily5)?Routinely check freshening area and assist in birthing process as needed.6)?Monitor all animals for health and stress7)?Maintain all equipment as prescribed by manufacturer's suggestions. Be certain all machinery is in working order. Notify manager immediately if any malfunctions occur.8)?Take any necessary feed or forage samples for nutrient testing.9)?Be certain all pastures and fencing are maintained. Repair these items when needed.10)?Maintain all equipment and tools in an orderly manner so they are readily available to use by any employee if needed.11)?Treat sick animals and administer appropriate prescription drugs as directed.12)?Perform routine vaccinations.13)?Assist in any special projects or routine maintenance of farmstead.Milking Responsibilities:1)?Be certain to look at treatment records so that milk from treated cows is not put into the bulk tank. Since all milk will be sampled for various drug residues at each pick-up, it is the technician's responsibility to guarantee that milk shipped meets the current State Public Milk Ordinance.2)?Note cows that may have mastitis or other problems and perform possible treatment.3)?Clean the milking area and bulk tank room.4)?Operate all milking equipment as recommended by factory specifications.5)?After milking, be sure all machinery and sanitation procedures are followed according to manufacturer's specification and Grade A Standards of the Public Milk Ordinance.Academic Responsibilities: These responsibilities may include, but are not limited to the following:1)?Respond to student inquiries.2)?Conduct all activities in a professional manner to best represent NTC and the dairy industry.General Office Work and Procurement1)?Record keeping (herd health, production, reproduction, and inventories).2)?Monthly inventories.3)?Order supplies, repair parts, feed.4)?Discuss needs and problems with sales and service representatives.??Qualifications:Qualifications:1)?Five years working or managing a dairy cow farm2)?Good communication skills3)?Strong work ethic4)?Dairy animal care experience5)?Must have a valid Wisconsin driver's license and pass NTC's motor vehicle background check.Preferred:1.?Degree in agriculture focusing on dairy production2.?Knowledge of Robotic milking3.?Experience with cow management techniques4.?Agriculture equipment mechanical experience5.?Experience using GPS and GIS technologyThe duties and responsibilities listed are intended to describe the essential functions of persons assigned to this job.?
