Position SummaryThe Assistant Herdsperson plays a key role in the dairy operations to ensure that we meet our milk quality and production goals while maintaining a healthy herd. Our two dairies have both free-stall and tie-stall barns. Animal observation and cleanliness of our barn are critical, as is following all protocols and procedures while contributing to their ongoing improvement. This hands-on position requires a good deal of time spent with our herd, as well as some administrative duties. A high level of organization is required to balance these responsibilities. Our dairies have received many awards over the years for milk quality, and our goal is to maintain these high standards and keep volumes consistent. Our milking practices are meticulous to ensure the high quality and safety of our raw milk, and thereby the best possible cheese made at Jasper Hill. Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesMilking cows in a tie stall barn or milking parlorEnsure that optimal herd health, reproduction, and good animal welfare practices are maintainedEnsure animals are handled in a way consistent with the cleanliness & hygiene needed to make raw milk cheeseManage nutrition and ration development for the herdActively engage with PC Dart Knowledge and Skill RequirementsExperience working with dairy cowsEducation or experience in managing a small business preferredStrong communication skills; computer skills; attention to detailAble to: learn quickly, ask questions, share concerns, seek information/answers, problem solveIndependently motivated and team orientedExperience running farm equipment for cropping hay Physical RequirementsMust be able to lift 60 lbs regularly, be able to bend and kneel, and have a good sense of balance.
