The successful applicant will work with a dedicated team of microbiologists to provide laboratory support in a research environment, including clinical diagnostic microbiology, propagation and recovery of bacterial pathogens, in vitro clinical assays, and processing of clinical samples. To be successful, the applicant must have strong knowledge in bacteriology, experience with in vitro assay development/bacterial propagation methods, and clinical veterinary microbiology. The applicant must be able to multitask and manage various support activities from multiple project teams. Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills are essential. The position is in Richland, Michigan, USA. POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES * Apply and modify existing culture methods and identify bacterial pathogens from veterinary clinical specimens * Develop and refine new methods for immunological and bacterial assays, including assays for bacterial culturing, recovery and diagnostics. * Identify appropriate diagnostic microbiology methods and recovery bacterial pathogens from diagnostic specimens * Review microbiological methods in protocols and provide feedback to research study director to assure methods are appropriate for study goals. * Perform data entry, record verification, and study validation procedures, including methods for GLP study support * Provide routine assessments of microbiology laboratory supply needs, order supplies/media and provide other related general laboratory activities * Work with project teams to design and execute microbiological methods, including associated processing and analysis of clinical samples. * Provide data summary reports and assist teams with preparing standard methods, protocol sections and reports * Work with the Microbiology and Diagnostic Lab to maintain an accurate study calendar and anticipate study supply needs to assure study timelines are met * Maintain flexibility to support unanticipated clinical/diagnostic requests by project teams and veterinary care staff and be willing to rotate lab duties with the team on weekends and holidays.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCEMinimum * Bachelors degree in Medical Technology, Microbiology or related fields and two years of clinical diagnostic microbiology experience or Associates degree in Medical Technology/Microbiology/related field and three years microbiology diagnostic experience. * Minimum two years microbiology laboratory experience and proven skills in bacterial identification, bacterial isolation and culturing techniques from clinical specimens; ability to reproducibly grow pure cultures of bacteria and apply aseptic culture methods. * Willing to handle and process veterinary clinical samples, including tissue/organ samples, blood, serum and milk. * Willing to work with a variety of bacterial pathogens, including some zoonotic pathogens * Able to prioritize and work efficiently, both with minimal supervision and in a team environment. * Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and interpersonal skills. * Computer skills required: Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, electronic data capture systemsPreferred * Experience in clinical bacterial identification techniques and an understanding of bacterial physiology and bacterial growth characterization * Experience in modern diagnostic microbiology (MALDI, PCR) and anaerobic culture conditions * Experience in Immunological assays such as ELISA, Western Blot. * Experience in basic tissue culture is a bonus
