Bioinformatics Programmer ? Contract Position
NATURE OF WORK We are currently seeking a highly motivated contractual computer/data scientist to provide bioinformatic programming support to the Genomics & Microbiome Sciences R&D team. The position is up to two years and is located at our research facility in Madison, WI. The individual?s primary focus would be to help develop bioinformatic platforms for the manipulation and analysis of bacterial genomic data from probiotics and microbiomes. This role requires strong programming skills and experience working with genetic databases. The ability to work independently and in a very interactive team environment is required as is a passion for science and technology. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Scale up existing and develop new sequencing data and analysis pipelinesImplement and maintain genetic databasesDevelop scripts, programs, and other computational tools to process, transform, visualize, and analyze genetic datasetsPerform literature searches of bioinformatic advances and provide recommendations on the incorporation of new tools and conceptsMaintains thorough documentation of process workflows and data architecture SCOPE OF POSITION The contractor will be a member of the Madison-based R&D group, specifically the Genomics & Microbiome Science group. In this role, they will be expected to conduct research as part of multifunctional project teams with the guidance of the GEM team leader and teammates, based on specific business goals as set by the Health & Protection leadership. As needed, the individual will be expected to help with a variety of tasks as suitable to the role. Direction will come from the GEM team leader and teammates. Research activities and responsibilities will be integrated into the overall global Technology as part of Health & Protection within Nutrition and Health. WORK CONDITIONS Operates in an office / laboratory environment. Part-time, 20-30 hr per week. Set schedule preferred.Qualifications:Trained in Computer Science, Genetics, or related field with an emphasis in programming and bioinformatics.Position requires a min of 3 yrs experience with a BSc or MSc designationProficiency in UNIX/Linux development environment and relevant programming languages (e.g. R, Matlab, Python, Perl). Experience with HPC clusters and revision control is desirable.Familiarity with large public and private sequence databases (e.g. KEGG, BioCyc, Pfam).Experience with relational databases and enabling web-based access (Java, HTML, XML)Demonstrated ability to independently design, manage, and perform multi-task projects to a successful result.Must be a team player and a focused individual with a strong work ethic and great attention to detail.Compliance with all company policies is required.
