The primary responsibilities of this role, as a Bioinformatics Specialist II, are to:Participate in a multi-disciplinary team of scientists to offer bioinformatics, comparative genomics, genome assembly and annotation, SNP detection, and RNA Seq analyses for controlling pests and diseases in plant and promoting plant health using microbes; Proactively identifying and incorporating new algorithms and technology to automate the analysis of microbial genomes and to extend the features of existing analysis pipelinesTake the initiative in bringing recent developments in bioinformatics software to the teamJoin a computational life sciences team which brings together expertise in biology, computational science, statistics, bioinformatics and software development;Communicate effectively through listening, documentation, and presentation, especially using compelling visualization tools to share analysis and interpretation of dataProvide analysis and feedback about experimental results to supervisors, highlighting important results and defining next step experimentsCoordinate and cooperate on research activities with peers, supervisors, and subordinatesCommunicate effectively by listening, documentation, and presentation. More specifically related to this position, Bayer seeks an incumbent who possesses the following: M.S. with 1+ years OR B.Sc. with 2+ years of relevant experience;Degree in Bioinformatics, Microbial Ecology, Microbial Genetics/Physiology/Ecology;Proven ability to handle large data sets efficiently using scripts, databases, and other tools;Comfortable with some basic statistical concepts and able to converse with other scientists about how to interpret basic statistical analyses such as ANOVA, linear regression, and power analyses;Knowledge of R;Knowledge of other programming languages is an essential (Unix, Python, Perl, C, C++) and an ability to use high performance computing clusters.
