Bioprocess Development – Assistant Scientist

The Assistant Scientist will be responsible for developing new products, optimizing current products, and scaling products/processes up from laboratory to commercial scale. The applied research conducted by the Assistant Scientist will involve all aspects of the manufacturing process which include, but are not limited to fermentation, downstream processing, stabilization, freeze drying, post drying processing/handling, and performance evaluation. Accordingly, the Assistant Scientist is expected to be familiar with all aspects of the manufacturing process, so that sound lab scale experiments can be designed to account for the stresses and hold times encountered by the product during manufacturing and to troubleshoot the process, especially during scale up to commercial scale. Emphasis is placed on increasing fermentation yield, enhancing cell counts and stability, and improving acidifying activity of select strains. The projects and subprojects assigned to the Assistant Scientist will be based on the needs of the Business and Operations. The Assistant Scientist will manage these projects/subprojects as Project Manager/Subproject Manager and will use Project Management principles to achieve the project objectives and deliverables.  This will involve developing a project plan with the help of key stakeholders (i.e. Business, Operations, CMT, and Innovation), perform experimental work as technical lead, and organize the execution of different elements of the project. The Assistant Scientist will also have responsibilities for assisting the Group Manager with tasks to keep the lab running on a day-to-day basis.     Essential Duties and Responsibilities  The essential functions of this position include the following:Independently conduct applied research for new product development, optimization of current products, and scale up of products/processes up from lab to commercial scale. Independently design a sound approach and sound experiments with appropriate controls to optimize performance of the strains while taking into account the stresses and hold times imposed by the manufacturing process.Develop Project/Subproject Plan using input from key stakeholders in Business, Operations, CMT, Innovation).Execute project plan using Project Management principles to achieve project objectives and deliverables.Document results in lab notebooks and update corresponding spreadsheets.Communicate results to immediate supervisor and project/subproject stakeholders on a regular basis.Write technical reports/notes to report observations and results during the course of the projects.  Conduct research and perform experiments with (and train) Lab Technicians, Sr. Technicians, and Assistant Scientists (in supportive role for project/subproject) as part of day-to-day work to accomplish objectives and deliverables of project.Perform literature searches to add knowledge and strengthen approach for project/subproject work and stimulate idea generation for ???breakthrough???.Write invention disclosures as appropriate to protect innovative processes.Regular attendance is mandatory and schedule flexibility is preferred to support immediate supervisor with lab scale development and scale up work in Pilot and Production, which may need support from time-to-time that overlap with 2nd or 3rd shifts.Strict adherence to GMP.Assist the Group Manager with tasks to keep the lab running on a day-to-day basis, such as ordering, maintenance work orders, lab upkeep, 5S, initiating POs, coordinating equipment preventative maintenance, updating team on lab safety, and plant construction work affecting labs.Compliance with DuPont???s Core Values, Life Saving Rules, and all other company policies is required. Keep work area clean. Qualifications:Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Mandatory 2-year Associate???s Degree with course work and major/double major in the following or related areas: microbiology, biochemistry, biotechnology, food science, or related field.Knowledge of lactic acid bacteria physiology, genetics, and food fermentation systems preferred, but not mandatory.1-3 years work experience in same/similar field preferred, but not mandatory. Training/knowledge of Project Management principles preferred, but not mandatory.Previous experience managing a project/subproject or independent study preferred, but not mandatory. Able to independently develop sound approach to research and design sound experiments, which incorporate appropriate controls.Possess oral and written skills for communication and presentation of observations/results to project stakeholders.Mandatory proficiency with MS Office.
