Breeding Precision Phenotyping Validation Lead (MS/PHD)
Come join our team! Test and validate new phenotyping technologies for Plant Breeding for all crops globally. Prioritize which phenotypes are next to be validated, and ensure opportunities are not lost. Organize teams of breeding scientists to rigorously test new phenotyping methods and challenge the status quo. Coordinate efforts with predictive ag (PA) scientists and data science and informatics (DSI) in technology development. Organize the presentation of validation results to leadership. Innovate boldly, but ensure that risk of failure is minimized as we move to new technologies. 1. Work with global research operations network, breeders, and leadership to prioritize the next precision phenotyping opportunities for breeding. Think globally and focus on all crops as the opportunities are presented and as resources are made available. Clients for validation should include the needs of research centers, large scale testing locations, the needs of inbred testing sites, transgene field characterization, and/or crop protection. Travel to visit with colleagues globally to understand needs. As appropriate, independently identify new technologies for precision phenotyping. Primary focus will be on drone-related technologiesSecondary focus will be on proximal sensing technologiesOther phenotyping opportunities will be evaluated as appropriate 50%2. Maintain a process to evaluate a diverse portfolio of new phenotyping technologies. Identify technologies that improve the precision, accuracy, and efficiency of data collection for existing and new traits.Connect tightly with PA teams as traits advance from feasibility testing to validationConnect ideas and proposals from plant breeding with resources and technical knowledge from Data Scientists in PA and DSIOrganize all validation teams for all crops. As necessary lead or delegate leadership of teams. Work with teams to define targets for achieving validation.Go beyond “replacement traits” and consider what new opportunities are available to breeding because of new phenotyping technologies.Assist in validation experimental design, planning, and execution with validation teams. Establish contacts at research centers to carry out validation work. Define strategy for resourcing and accounting for validation efforts.Develop common language for validation analyses. Organize and host meetings to present validation findings to members of Plant Breeding leadership.Translate outcomes of validation experiments into recommendationsHost validation team seminars/symposiums as necessary to allow sharing of ideas. Facilitate sharing of strategy across Plant Breeding, PA, IFS, breeding informatics, and DSI. 25%3. Prepare traits for deployment. Work with validation scientists to prepare trainings and presentations. Give presentations as appropriate.Co-Develop protocols and instructions for newly validated methodsWork with breeding informatics collaborators to get analytical support as needed. Work with DSI collaborators to inform of changes in analytics that will be required by new technologies.Bring validation teams together to exchange ideas and work on best practices. Travel to visit with validation scientists as appropriate and to visit sites and understand diverse cropping systems. Visit with operation leads to better understand challenges of current phenotyping methods and to find solutions.Lead development of quality control metrics of success as well as support infrastructure within the validation scientist and breeding community to collect high quality data.Other Duties Helps identify opportunities for improvements in phenotyping process to increase efficiency and safety.May serve on teams appropriate to cross project research initiatives, such as participation in tactical teams.May contribute to scientific publications, conferences and patent applications.Qualifications:Education: PhD in Plant Sciences; Breeding experience preferred orMaster’s Degree in Breeding with 8+ years’ experience Experience: 8+ years of field testing and hands-on data collection experience5+ data analysis and interpretation Critical Skills: Good written and oral English communication and interpersonal skills required.
