We are advancing next generation technologies and infrastructure to assure technology leadership in the horticultural industry. Essential components of our next generation innovation include investments in the design, build out, staffing, and management of a best in class analytical laboratory. We are seeking a seasoned scientist manager with experience in plant cell and/or reproductive biology to help drive a pipeline of advanced technology programs in ornamental horticulture breeding and product development. The individual in this position will be responsible for building and leading a team dedicated to the development activities necessary to advance cell and reproductive biology programs that create innovative new product solutions for growers, production, retailers and the consumer. The successful candidate will be a hands-on, participative manager who will make significant contributions to the strategy and execution within a diverse R&D organization and will be instrumental in collaborating with science and business teams. Well suited candidates will possess a high level of innovative thought leadership while balancing current cultural strengths and attributes. Job Duties Serves as the leader for an internal advanced technology team targeting:applications on existing cell biology techniquesdiscovery of new cell and reproductive biology techniques critical for the development of new and innovative products and processesAccountable to build a multi-disciplinary development team that appreciates existing Ball Horticultural competencies and resources while leading efforts to introduce innovative and novel approaches, implement new state-of-the-art techniques and enable access to a network of external collaborators. This position is accountable to lead, develop and provide career growth opportunities for team members.Coordinates, supports and coaches the team members, ensures availability of all necessary tools and initiation of actions that safeguard the progress and completion of research programs in compliance with objectives.Utilizes leadership approaches aligned with Ball Horticultural company culture emphasizing selflessness and company successCollaborates and provides service to both the breeding and production organizations in the development and management of new production techniques in both seed and asexually propagated products Assures the delivery and output of this biology unit are well aligned with Ball Horticultural Company’s strategic growth objectives and global mission Plays a key role in a larger advanced technologies team in delivering technical innovations and solutions to a world class breeding and production organizationManages domestic and international programs in the areas of cell and reproductive biology. Responsible for delivering high quality, milestone driven research to advance Ball’s mission.Monitors and consistently evaluates research programs for quality and effectiveness and contributes towards efficient program management.Assists in the development of a budget and make decisions on administrative and operational matters for the team POSITION REQUIREMENTS Professional Experience and QualificationsPh.D. degree in a scientific competency area (e.g. plant sciences, cell biology, reproductive biology, tissue culture).5 or more years working experience and expertise with demonstrated knowledge and experience in the scientific competency area plus experience working in close collaboration with plant breeders.Demonstrated track record with applied or strategic R&D and innovation.Previous management experience and exceptional communication and collaboration skills critical to guide and manage within the larger cross-functional organization and with multiple product development areasDemonstrated capability for creating and implementing high quality innovative concepts for R&D development and execution (program and project proposals and reports, publications, presentations, innovation platforms).Experience in and an appreciation for multicultural and multinational collaborations, teams and clients.Experienced in leading researchers, scientists and technicians.Role requires a strong appreciation for research but a particular focus on product development and commercial viabilityTravel RequirementsTravel: Domestic and international travel required approximately 25%Apply for this job.
