Center Pivot Irrigation Technician

MAJOR FUNCTIONThis is manual and technical work at a skilled level involving the maintenance, repair and operation of center pivot systems and complex electrical and mechanical irrigation systems used on a large farming operation located along the Columbia River.Work involves inspection, preventative maintenance, manual repair and operation of the complete pumping and irrigation systems, as well as periodic maintenance of the center pivots. The work includes maintaining and ensuring the proper operation of all valves, pivots, pumps, supply lines and controllers. Duties involve the operation of various tools and equipment necessary to properly maintain the irrigation systems. Work is normally performed under general supervision; however, the incumbent must exercise considerable independent judgment and initiative in the performance of daily assignments. Work is inspected while in progress and upon completion, and is reviewed through conversation, analysis of reports, and evaluation of results achieved. ESSENTIAL AND OTHER IMPORTANT JOB DUTIESEssential DutiesInspects irrigation systems, including all valves and controllers on a periodic basis and as required to assure proper operation. Repairs, adjusts and replaces parts as required to assure proper operation of all irrigation, pumping and sprinkler systems. Cleans and assures the properoperation of PLCs, and makes minor repairs and adjustments as required. Repairs and replaces valves and sprinkler head parts and supply lines.Operates center pivots and pumps as necessary to coincide with activities conducted by owners of the farms. Diagnose electrical and mechanical center pivot problems and repair same, including changing tires and input and output gearboxes.Other Important DutiesMaintains adequate inventory of parts and supplies used in irrigation repairs. Maintains and submits reports as required. Consults with others in the organization regarding irrigation issues. Performs related work as required. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONSKnowledge, Abilities and SkillsConsiderable knowledge of the principles and practices of irrigation systems maintenance and repair.Considerable knowledge and skill in the use of electrical test equipment, plumbing tools and general mechanic tools. General knowledge of gear drives, hydraulics, pneumatics and filtration. Knowledge and awareness of the hazards and safety precautions required of the work. Ability to diagnose operational problems within irrigation and pivot systems, and repair, adjust or replace faulty system components as required. Ability to understand instructions and perform the required work from general diagrams and specifications. Ability to make simple estimates of materials and equipment needed to perform the work. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships as necessitated by work assignments. IRRIGATION TECHNICIANPreferred Training and ExperiencePossession of a high school diploma or an equivalent recognized certificate and three years of experience that includes irrigation, mechanical maintenance, or plumbing; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.Necessary Special RequirementsMust possess a clear and active Driver's License at the time of hire. Must be able to pass a pre-employment drug screening and criminal background screening.
