County Agent III – CY equivalent to Asst Professor

This position will be housed at the Salem County RCE office located in Woodstown, NJ The Department of Agriculture and Natural Resources of Rutgers Cooperative Extension (RCE) at Rutgers University invites applications for a full time, 12 month calendar year, tenure track faculty position at the rank of County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor). The position will provide leadership and support for the commercial agricultural industries in Salem County and throughout the southern region of NJ with specific emphasis and expertise in forage and grain; agribusiness planning, risk and financial management; with a working knowledge of animal agriculture systems. BENEFITS: Excellent personal benefits package, including 22 days of annual leave per year, health insurance, life insurance, retirement program, and professional improvement opportunities.• Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees required from an accredited institution in agronomy (forage and grain emphasis), animal science (large animal emphasis), or related field• Three years minimum of post-degree professional experience required for appointment to the rank of County Agent III (equivalent to Assistant Professor)• Research experience in experimental design, data collection, evaluation and analysis is preferred• Effective public speaking and presentation skills for program delivery and communications to clientele are required• Supervisory or managerial experience is preferred. Evidence of successfully training, mentoring, and evaluating staff, ensuring the requirements and objectives of program outreach and impact• Have the ability to work cooperatively and communicate with staff and clientele • Computer proficiency is required • Willingness and dedication to commit to the long hours associated with the position are expected• Current NJDEP Pesticide Applicators License in the appropriate categories, or ability to acquire same within 9 months post-hire• A valid NJ driver’s license or ability to acquire said license is a necessity for the performance of this position• Demonstrated expertise in and provide leadership to develop, implement, and evaluate educational programming and applied and evaluative research appropriate to the needs of the clientele in field and forage (grain) crops production; livestock and animal agriculture; pasture management; and animal waste management• Maintain knowledge and provide assistance in wholesale marketing and financial agribusiness management• Provide research for innovative practices, grain or crop production transition, and support for small farm / beginner farmer / lifestyle livestock and animal agriculture producers• Design and implement applied or evaluative research with measurable impacts on clientele and the profession• Collaborate with farmers and agricultural groups, municipal and county governments, non-governmental organizations in the county and region, and the Agriculture and Natural Resources Department’s Forage and Grain and Animal Agriculture Working Groups• Assess needs, share research-based information to achieve knowledge gain and skills development, and document changes in clientele practice or conditions• Coordinate implementation of programmatic efforts with fellow RCE faculty and staff in the region and across the state to develop outreach/education methods and materials• Expected to garner external resources through grants and contracts, and alternative funding streams for support of the program• Participate in appropriate Departmental, Cooperative Extension, New Jersey Agricultural Experiment Station (NJAES), School of Environmental and Biological Science, Rutgers University and county administrative functions. • Expected to establish an outstanding program in forage and grain, animal agriculture and agribusiness management, the merits of which will lead to regional and/or national recognition.  Salem County is located in southwestern New Jersey, with its western boundary formed by the Delaware River, while bounded to the northeast by Gloucester County and to the southeast by Cumberland County. As of the 2017 Census estimate, the county’s population was 62,792, making it the state’s least populous county. The county terrain is almost uniformly flat coastal plain, with minimal relief. The highest elevation in the county is likely one of seven low rises in Upper Pittsgrove Township that reach approximately 160 feet in elevation, with sea level the lowest point. The county’s natural features include six rivers, more than 34,000 acres of meadow and marshland, tidal and freshwater wetlands, 40 lakes and ponds, beaches, expansive woodlands, a critical underground aquifer, numerous streams, and important headwaters. The total annual precipitation is 44.04 inches; of this, about 23.5 inches, or 53%, usually falls in April through September, while he average seasonal snowfall is 19.2 inches. According to the 2012 Agricultural Census, Salem County has 825 farms comprising 101,847acres for an average farm size of 123 acres. That same census revealed $111.9 million in commodity sales, with crop sales totaling $94.0 million (84%) and livestock sales totaling $17.9 million (16%). Within the crop sales total, the “grains, oilseeds, dry beans, and dry peas” sector held the largest total with $37.2 million in activity (39.6%).
