The county is composed of 14 municipalities, including three cities, one borough, and ten townships. Cumberland County occupies about 500 square miles and has over 40 miles of Delaware Bay coastline. As of the 2017 Census estimate, the county’s population was 152,538, making it the state’s 16th-most populous county. With few major roads other than the limited access highway Route 55, it is one of the most remote and rural counties in New Jersey. In fact, land cover data reveals that only 12% of the county is characterized as urban or developed, and agricultural land is located in every township of Cumberland County, particularly in the western portion of the county. According to the 2012 Agricultural Census, Cumberland County has 583 farms comprising 64,526 acres for an average farm size of 111 acres. That same census revealed $170.3 million in commodity sales, with crop sales totaling $165.5 million (97%) and livestock sales totaling $4.8 million (3%). Within the crop sales total, the “nursery, greenhouse, floriculture, and sod” sector held the largest total with $97 million in both container and in-ground production activity (58%) with an additional $10.5 million in “fruits, tree nuts, and berries.” This resulted in Cumberland County being ranked #1 across the state in total value of agricultural products sold and value of crops including nursery and greenhouse.
