Job Description Title: Director of Quality and Regulatory OperationsDepartment: QRO and R&DLocation: Corporate – Fostoria, OHReports To: VP of QRO and R&DTravel: 25% SUMMARY: The Director of QRO is responsible for leading the overall guidance and management of Mennel Milling’s quality, food safety, and regulatory compliance efforts. This position is ultimately responsible for establishing and managing the QRO standards for all Mennel production facilities, in order to achieve operational excellence in all facets of the business. PRIMARY WORK SHIFT:Monday through Friday 8AM – 5PM. Can vary, depending on workload. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Include the following – Other duties may be assigned: Functional Leadership Provide organizational leadership to Mennel’s quality and regulatory operations, in a dynamic and collaborative environment.The Director of QRO will be an active member of Mennel’s corporate leadership team; responsible for helping set the QRO strategies and goals for the company’s food manufacturing operations.This position will be responsible for executing the strategic and tactical plans as established with the VP of QA & R&D. Must foster a collaborative working relationship with the entire operations & QRO team in order to achieve these plans.Be a champion for continuous improvement and implement successful strategies to achieve overall excellence in QRO.Must foster a world-class QRO mentality that ensure Mennel’s facilities and finished products meet and/or exceed the company and government standards of quality, sanitation and food safety.Must be a developer of talent to ensure future business success and growth within our human resources.Uses the Mennel Corporate Mission, Quality, and Safety Statements as guiding principles in the decision-making process.Directs and coordinates operations in accordance with established company policies and procedures.Acts as the key QRO resource for members of the entire Operations team. Quality Assurance Lead, maintain and continually improve the corporate QA program and procedures to achieve the highest quality results across all locations.Effectively manage Mennel’s “LIMS” system to continually improve on QA results.Properly manage the customer’s finished product specifications to ensure the highest quality products that fully satisfy the needs of Mennel’s customers.Serve as the lead person for any communications with customers regarding finished product specifications, quality requirements, quality complaints, etc.Develop and manage an annual QRO financial budget.Monitor new crop wheat quality and coordinate new crop transition plans at each applicable location to ensure that finished product quality standards are maintained.Work closely with the Grain Department to identify quality wheat sources that ensure the required quality at a competitive price.Manage Mennel’s wheat blend optimization program. Food Safety and Regulatory Compliance Lead the corporate food safety program(s).Direct all efforts to maintain or exceed compliancy with all existing and newly adopted food safety/security regulations that apply to Mennel’s facilities. Strive for consistency across all locations.Be the point person and corporate resource for all 3rd party food safety/sanitation audits.Continually monitor, modify, maintain, and improve Mennel’s BRC program as necessary, including all relevant corporate policies, plans and procedures, to achieve consistency and compliancy across all applicable locations.Effectively communicate with facility managers on a regular basis to keep all updated on any applicable changes to our food safety programs, policies, and regulations.Manage an effective internal plant auditing program to drive excellence in food safety, GMP, sanitation practices out in the field.Direct Mennel’s response to all customer audit and survey requests/requirements.Keep company senior management informed as necessary, of all major food safety-related activities/initiatives.Lead Mennel’s efforts to effectively and efficiently field, respond, and properly follow-up to any customer complaint or notification in order to drive improvement (reduction) in complaints from year to year.Stay informed and up to date on current food safety/sanitation/compliance trends in our industry. SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:Effectively manage/supervise direct reports as necessary to deliver outstanding performance, as well as collaborate with location managers to effectively direct the quality manager personnel at Mennel’s production facilities. QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the education, knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. B.S. in food science, food technology, milling science or related field is required. Advanced degree is preferred.7-10 years of progressive experience in leading an organization in quality assurance, food safety and/or food regulatory compliance is required.Strong leadership skills, including the ability to implement change, influence business strategies, guide and direct others, and resolve conflict.Excellent technical writing, speaking, and presentation skills.Thoroughly understands the business in which we operate, and knows how the inputs and outputs affect the end results.Must have solid communication skills and be able to interact and productively communicate with all levels of the organization.Ability to develop and lead strategic initiatives as well as plan the specific tactics to achieve the strategic vision.Ability to develop and coach others.Ability to adjust to multiple demands, shifting work priorities, ambiguity, adversity and change.Must be self-motivated, have initiative, and be able to effectively work independently.Must have a commitment to driving and delivering results.Possesses clear standards of personal integrity, business ethics and values. REQUIRED LANGUAGE SKILLS:Ability to read and comprehend simple and complex instructions, short correspondence, memos, procedures, plans, spreadsheets, various research documents, product specifications, financial information and reports, technical documents including flowsheets, P&ID’s, equipment layouts, and other technical documents. Ability to effectively write reports, policies, programs, and procedures. Ability to present information or data in one-on-one and small group situations to co-workers, supervisors, managers, peers, and senior management. REQUIRED MATHEMATICAL SKILLS: Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. REQUIRED REASONING ABILITY:Must use common sense and solid judgment when making decisions. Must have ability to quickly recognize areas of improvement.
