Discovery Pathology Intern – #01SBN
We are currently hiring a Discovery Pathology Intern who will be based with the Vegetable Pathology team in Woodland, California. The pathology team provides a foundation for development of novel products in the Vegetable R&D pipeline by delivering high quality disease screening data, ensuring accessibility to these data through tools and analytics, and implementing impactful new technologies. We are looking for a highly motivated intern to join our team for a summer and help bring to life our vision of plant pathology for the future: on-the-spot disease results that help our customers and growers make informed decisions to keep their crops healthy. As part of our team, you will learn and become adept at using a variety of traditional and molecular tools specific for the vegetable pathogens we work with, before taking on our newest and most daunting challenge: pathogen microsequencing. This disruptive technology will provide us with unprecedented amounts of data about the health of our crops; you will help us use this data effectively so our growers and customers can make better decisions, quicker. This summer internship will be held May-August of 2019.Responsibilities May Include:Use of traditional and molecular tools for vegetable pathogen diagnostics which may include extracting genetic material from plant tissues, PCR, RT-PCR, qPCR, gel electrophoresis, LAMP, RPA, library prep, and high throughput sequencingSupport vegetable pathogen diagnostics by implementing a functional and efficient diagnostic sequencing workflow for multiple sample typesEnsure consolidation and documentation of sequence and reference data in designated repositories and ensure availability to stakeholdersContribute to development of scripted tools to be leveraged by our team and collaborators to increase efficiency of bioinformatic workflowsQualifications:Required: Currently enrolled in a Bachelor of Science, Master of Science, or PhD Degree program in Plant Science, Genetics, Computational Biology or a related field at an accredited university within the U.S. Bachelors students should be entering Junior or Senior year of program3.0 cumulative GPAMust be returning to school to continue program of study or begin an advanced degree upon completion of internship. Some experience with plant disease diagnosis, plant genomics, high throughput sequencing, molecular biological laboratory techniques, large data sets, and bioinformatics tools ?? Proficient in MS Office Word, Excel, Access, Office365, SharePointGood understanding of basic statistical concepts and linear modelsHighly self-motivated, detail oriented and driven to provide operational excellenceStrong written and oral communication, interpersonal and organizational skills to collaborate effectively with interdisciplinary teams Preferred: Experience with command-line tools and scriptingKnowledge and experience in experimental design, statistical analyses and relevant plant breeding software applicationsAbility to deliver innovative and creative solutions to complex problemsSpecific experience with vegetable crops Experience with R or other statistical toolsApply for this job.
