Job Summary: Provide environmental engineering and regulatory support for a manufacturing plant, including support for new processes, process modifications, and plant experiments. This includes understanding State and Federal environmental regulations, assessing and communicating the implication of those regulations to Operations and other personnel, and working with those persons to develop and implement cost-effective compliance solutions. Scope / Specific Responsibilities of the Position: Maintain an understanding of plant operations, attend project reviews and review management of changes for assigned manufacturing area to determine environmental impactAccurately apply environmental engineering principlesRead and interpret regulations to communicate and assist in applying those requirements to plant operationsAnticipate new regulations and take the appropriate actions to minimize their impact through implementation of cost-effective solutionsIdentify non-compliance situations and work with regulatory agencies to resolve them Accurately prepare permit applications in a way that provides maximum flexibility in plant operationsComplete accurate engineering calculations to support environmental emissions reporting and for permit applicationsAssist in training plant employees to comply with regulations and corporate environmental guidelinesQualifications:Required Qualifications:Education:B.S. in Chemical or Environmental Engineering or related degreeExperience:Three years of environmental support for a manufacturing facility Competencies/Skills:The position requires strong written and verbal communication skills, strong problem solving skills, the ability to read and interpret complex environmental regulations and the integrity to assure compliance. Strong personal initiative, basic knowledge of environmental and chemical engineering principalsThe ability to establish and maintain positive relationshipsThe individual in this position works in a small group but must be able to work independently, gather relevant information, and make decisions with little supervision. The individual must also be flexible and react quickly to changing job demands. Ideal Candidate Will Also Possess: At least 5 years of experience in environmental engineering in a chemical manufacturing facility Experience with Iowa environmental rules as well as Federal and other state regulations.Demonstrated skills in time management and managing multiple prioritiesDemonstrated decision making skillsExperience with Responsible Care (RC14001/RCMS) Management SystemsBroad-based technical or specialized knowledge for working in one or more environmental media (air, water, waste). For example:Assembly of Title V and construction permit applicationsExperience with air modeling software for NAAQS complianceWorking knowledge of RCRA hazardous waste regulationsExperience with MACT regulations and reportingKnowledge of SPCC plan requirementsExperience with NPDES permitting and reportingExperience with CFC/refrigerants regulationsPrior experience with Chemical Weapons Convention declarations requirementsEmissions inventory compilation and reporting Previous experience working with regulatory personnel. Description of Specific Work Conditions and Physical Requirements:The position is in a manufacturing environment and although it requires significant time in the office, it may also require the ability to access all areas of the plant in order to support and review plant engineering projects, develop and implement stack testing, troubleshoot problems and investigate release incidents, and ability to use a respirator may be required in some job functions. The role requires the ability to work a full eight hour day within the flexible schedule of 6:00 am to 5:30 pm. Limited travel is expected for site support, meetings, or development purposes.
