Our three main business segments include chip potato, seed potato and specialty potato production. Reporting RelationshipsThe Agronomist will report directly to the Farm Manager and will work closely with other members of the site and corporate management teams. This position has no direct reports at this time, but may have an intern during the summer season or additional full-time support as deemed necessary. Essential Functions and ResponsibilitiesThe Agronomist s primary responsibility will be to support potato production, including:Soil sampling and fertilizer recommendationsDevelopment and execution of pest management strategiesMonitor soil moisture and schedule irrigationsScout fields on a weekly basis and recommend necessary adjustments to management plans Provide quality control oversight on key farm operations, especially the following:Seed handling and cuttingPlanter spacing accuracyIrrigation system application uniformityChemical application (coverage and timing)Plant tissue and soil sampling during the growing season for fertility managementTest digs to estimate yields and monitor qualityMonitoring of bruise-free handling during harvest as well as storage managementScouts fields for diseased plants and directs roguing crews if necessaryPlant maturity evaluations, including sugar testing in the field and in storage Develop and conduct R&D experiments to provide insight on key production issues, including:PVY and other disease controlPhysiological age and implications for seedPsyllid, zebra chip, and other disease controlNew variety evaluationVariety specific agronomy (seed spacing, fertility, etc.)Use of VRT to optimize cost per cwt and qualityMaximize water-use and fertilizer-use efficiency Required Position QualificationsBachelors of Science degree in agronomy or related field (Masters degree preferred)Proficient in the use of Windows based computer programs (Excel, Access, PowerPoint) and a general aptitude with software systems, including statistical analysis softwareExcellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to train and work with operational personnel on the farmSuperior organizational and project management skillsExperience in leading and managing peopleAbility to acquire and hold a valid driver s license and successfully pass vehicle insurance verification is required. Candidates must be eligible to work unrestricted in the U.S. without company sponsorship to be considered for this position.Ability to comprehend, read, write and communicate proficiently in English and interact with all levels of the organization.
