Field Biologist with emphasis on Agronomy/Weed Science

Michigan Ag Research, a contract research station part of Pacific Ag Group, is seeking a Field Biologist to work out of the Michigan facility located 40 minutes southwest of Lansing, near the town of Albion, MI. A successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary program focused on the biological characterization of crop protection, biological control agents, and other new agricultural products for crop enhancement.Specifically, the incumbent will be assigned to:Conduct and assist with assays in the laboratory, greenhouse, and field to characterize experimental crop protection products for their potential to control crop pests. Also conduct foliar or soil fertility trials for yield improvement. Crops to include field, fruit, greenhouse, and vegetable crops.Weigh, formulate, and apply experimental and commercial compounds to target crops.Characterize efficacy and crop safety of materials following treatment.Assist with data collection and review of trial research and interpretation of results.Manage scheduling and conduct of daily study assessments working in coordination with other lead biologists. Timely, organized submission of trial data to company’s reporting team, and maintenance of site record keeping.Manage local field and equipment record keeping as needed for any regulated research (with appropriate training provided by company).Attend continuing educational training for professional development to improve test system refinement.Work directly with customers for feedback on trial work and guidance on trial establishment as appropriate to meet customer protocol objectives. Collaborate with other biologists and our customers to ensure success.Laboratory, greenhouse and field work that will involve the safe handling of chemicals. Qualifications Required:BS or MS degree in the field of crop science, horticulture, crop protection,agriculture, biology or related disciplinary sciences.Must have basic knowledge of experiment design and trial management.Position is an agricultural related Field Biologist position, not a lab position, and those with field research experience will be given preference.Must be able to safely handle and apply chemicals and other crop products.Have the ability and desire to work effectively as both an independent researcher and as a member of a multidisciplinary research team.Must have solid verbal and written communication skills.Be able to work in lab, greenhouse and agricultural field environments.Physical work common to establishment and harvest of plots that requires ability to lift 50 lbs.Equipment skills: microscope, pipettes, scales, common hand tools, various plot tools.Computer skills: MS-Word, Excel, PowerPoint.Have good observational skills in experiments with attention to detail.Valid vehicle operator’s license.This position will also require a Michigan Commercial Pesticide Applicator’s License within 60 days of hire if not certified now. Desired:BS or MS with at least 2 years relevant field experience.Candidate should be 21 years of age at date of hire for use of company vehicles.Degree focus on pest management and research of management tools, course work in entomology, pest management, plant pathology, crop production, and statistics including experimental design and analysis.Previous experience in crop pest management and chemical efficacy research in the lab,greenhouse, and field.Knowledge of or experience in crop production and research.Ability to perform mathematic calculations and conversions.
