General Manager of Dairy Operations
Focal Dairies LP is well known for the level of precision farming it takes to run a successful ‘pasture first’ dairy operation in climatic extremes. With a number of years in the operation and successful outcomes for stakeholders under his belt, the current GM is exploring new horizons and this is leaving this opportunity, (some would say the opportunity of a lifetime) for you! It takes something special to lead a business in the USA….(no, we’re not talking politics)…the climate is different, the labour market different, farming systems different and that’s before we even start talking about the culture. But if you’re the kind of person who embraces ‘different’ and is looking to bring your already finely tuned farming and leadership skills to the next level of challenge then keep reading. To be considered you’ll need to be able to prove that you have a successful dairy-farming career already under your belt with a record of reliable performance outcomes in good and tough times. Equally important is your ability to lead diverse teams, striking that right balance between management and leadership that delivers business as well as personal outcomes for the team. You’ll also have significant general management experience and will understand the requirements for clear strategic, financial and operational plans. You’ll have experience coaching other managers to support you to execute your plans successfully. But if you’re thinking right about now that this is an ‘in the office and ute job’ we can tell you it’s not…(and not just because utes are trucks in the US). At Focal the culture includes leading from the front and the GM is a rostered part of the farming team. You’ll be hands on, showing, teaching and learning as you go. Critical will be your ability to pick up on the already accumulated knowledge about pasture farming in this environment, alongside your intellect and ingenuity to keep pushing for better results. And if living in the USA isn’t different enough, the GM of Focal also needs to promote the business’ profile within the wider community and maintain an effective working relationship with the Department of Natural Resources and Missouri University…so you’ll have the mental capability and flex to foot it with the intellectuals and the tenacity to work with a cross cultural team maximising operational performance…all in the space of a few hours.
