Role Purpose Responsible for leading and managing the growing team to execute all aspects of crop production in support of breeding, product development, research trialing, marketing, and elite stock plants for Flowers R&D
Lead the planning and execution of R&D operations activities at the Gilroy site including crop pollinations, internal trial coordination, trial support administration, and budgeting
Coach individuals in the team to reach their potential, efficiently operating within the global R&D organization, with an output of high commercial value of Flowers products and solutions for our global and regional customersAccountabilities
Responsible for all aspects of production and plant quality of crops grown at the Syngenta Flowers Gilroy site in close cooperation with growing, trialing, lab services, breeding, and marketing teams
Mange and supervise the growing team to ensure the production of all trials are executed according to schedule, growing requirements and within agreed budgets and deadlines
Oversee all aspects of growing including propagation, transplanting, irrigation, fertilizer, plant growth regulator application, plant maintenance, insect and disease management, and crop scheduling Plan, assign, and schedule the growing team based on trial priorities and the quantity of trial requests throughout the year
Lead greenhouse and field production planning activities at R&D site. Map trial schedules and assign crops to locations that match their growing requirements while maximizing space use efficiency
Develop and manage yearly budgets for the assigned department
Utilize IS tools (e.g., Kikker) to create weekly work schedules based on tasks that need to be executed to grow trials Solve production problems and deliver optimal crop growing conditions with a focus on producing the highest quality plants possible
Program the greenhouse environmental control computer and optimize the greenhouse environment per crop requirements
Proactively monitor and scout plants for early detection of insects, diseases, and viruses. Develop an integrated pest management strategy
Interpret media and plant nutrient testing results to solve production problems and optimize growing conditions for each crop
Ensure all HSES and phytosanitary protocols are implemented, followed, and enforced
Contribute and update internal growing protocols based on learnings from production experiences
Train and advise the growing team on best production practices, new technical learnings, and crop maintenance techniques
Collaborate with trial owners to write crop culture schedules and ensure any updates are made in the IS tool
Maintain and update crop activity records, documents, chemical application logs, etc.
Lead weekly greenhouse crop production walks with trial owners, breeders, and growing team to ensure trials are grown according to plan and document any action items or changes to crop schedules
Participate in breeding delivery teams as a representative from the Growing team to ensure crop schedules and plant quality meet specifications
Communicate with trial owners on status of crops including plant quality, actions, scheduling, issues, etc.
Harmonize ways of working and knowledge exchange with R&D colleagues in EAME

Critical knowledge
B.S. degree in biological sciences, botany, genetics, agriculture, horticulture or crop or plant science is required.Critical experience
5+ years of growing experience
Capable of solving production problems and implementing new growing ideas that make business sense
Experience applying chemicals to plants
Experience successfully supervising a team of growersCritical technical, professional and personal capabilities Ability to obtain a California QAL pesticide license
Experience in horticulture practices in greenhouse and field
Ability to train and translate technical information
Excellent communication skills written/verbal, Spanish language skills helpful
