Independant Contractor- International Treaty on Plant
The American Seed Trade Association is looking for an independent contractor to represent the US seed industry and the Association at International Treaty on Plant Genetic Resources for Food and Agriculture (Treaty) meetings.? ?The Treaty is a specialized international access and benefit sharing regime recognized by the Convention on Biological Diversity.? It entered into force in 2004 with the objective to conserve, sustainably use and share benefits derived from the utilization of plant genetic resources for food and agriculture i.e., germplasm.? To achieve this objective, the Treaty established a multilateral system (MLS) for accessing germplasm and sharing benefits.? This global system aims to provide farmers, plant breeders and other scientists with access to plant genetic materials while also ensuring that recipients share benefits they derive from the development and use of these genetic resources.? The Treaty also recognizes the vital role farmers, especially farmers in centers of crop domestication, play in conserving the genetic resources the entire world needs for the future of food security.? ??Contracting Parties to the Treaty agree that ?facilitated access? to germplasm in the MLS constitutes a major benefit of the system. ?However, access and benefit sharing under the rules and procedures of the Treaty have not been implemented in an efficient and effective manner to date for many users.? The Governing Body of the Treaty recognized this issue and established an open ended working group to enhance the functioning of the MLS.? These negotiations are important for ASTA members since they directly impact all breeders? ability to access germplasm globally.? Furthermore, the importance of these negotiations to ASTA was elevated when the US Senate ratified the Treaty in 2016.? The USDA will soon place many of its crop accessions the MLS. ?The American Seed Trade Association is committed to helping establish and effective, global system for exchanging germplasm for all its members.? As such, ASTA is seeking an independent contractor who will represent the US seed industry and the Association in ongoing discussions about the Treaty, including negotiations to enhance the functioning of the MLS, within the global seed industry and at Treaty meetings. This position will be responsible for engaging in domestic and international discussions related the Treaty, building supportive networks within government delegations, developing and communicating industry positions on key topics within the negotiations, ?and other efforts to realize effective access and benefit sharing for germplasm.? The role involves representing the US industry position, and keeping ASTA and the US industry apprised of progress and decisions related to the Treaty. Extensive experience with Treaty negotiations and other international treaties, FAO/UN policies, and the global seed industry is necessary.?Apply for this job.
