The position reviews returns as prepared by the Tax Accountants. The position assists in answering queries and gathering information (including documenting tax positions) associated with statutory audits, appeals, or other government hearings/proceedings. This position must assist the Sr. Manager, US Tax in teaching and mentoring the Tax Accountants to aid in their career growth. The individual will also assist the Senior Tax Managers on any required federal or state/local project.The Manager, Tax Compliance & Research will report directly to the Sr. Manager, US Tax. What you will do:Governs the completion of and reviews over 100 state and local income/ franchise tax returns in 30 states and multiple local jurisdictionsReviews all federal tax returns for all entities. This process involves determining all book-tax differences, understanding the entities business and accounting practices, knowing the current tax laws, and researching and documenting tax positions on assigned entitiesReviews all state and local tax returns for all entities. These returns would include all allocation and apportionment calculations, income tax, franchise tax, and net worth taxOverlooks compliance of and reviews local miscellaneous tax returns, including Property Tax, Pollutants Tax, Intangibles Tax, and Severance TaxAdministers completion, review and calculation of all quarterly state-estimated paymentsManages the SOX compliance for the income tax group, ensures that all documentation follows the key control guidanceHelps in the management of all state and local statutory audits and keeps Sr Manager, US Tax informed of any significant developments, potential payments and/or refunds, and possible litigation issuesCoordinates the completion of all correspondence with federal, state and local taxing authorities, including notices, information requests, questionnaires, etc. Manages general state and local tax queries and research projects as required or requested from Sr Manager, US Tax, Plant Controllers/ Accountants/Retail locations or other Departments- including (but not limited to) income tax, franchise tax, property tax, pollution tax, intangibles tax, mine severance tax, and all other state/local taxesOversees and interacts with the IT Department and software vendors to ensure that our software systems allow the US Tax Department to accomplish our objectives and goalsSupervises all software upgrades, transitions, training, and vendor support – including the following software (but not limited to) as it pertains to the US Tax Department- Onesource RS, PowerPlan, Oracle (and Oracle Report Writer), Peoplesoft, and RIA Tax Research Software OnlineResearches and documents any material federal and state and local tax positions taken on returns or in provision calculationsPromotes and creates federal and state and local tax planning ideas within US Tax Department to accomplish specific Department metricsCoordinates external tax consultants and internal staff on all federal and state and local tax projectsUnderstands and monitors local tax issues, audits, and procedures by the various Controllers at the US plants. This includes overseeing periodic internal audits at the plant level on local tax compliance, issues, and proceduresHelps other Departments with miscellaneous tax issues, including Form 1099, 1042, Payroll and Employee BenefitsPrepares Form W8 BEN – E to provide external vendorsSupports the Sr Manager, US Tax on any required dutiesAssists in any miscellaneous federal tax compliance projects as requiredOther duties as assignedWhat you will bring:OneSource RS, RIA Tax Research, PowerPlan Fixed Assets, and Oracle or SAP experienceExceptional analytical acumen with the capacity to identify, scope and solve complex problemsStrong critical thinking ability.
