About this Job:In
this role, you will drive innovation in decision support tools for product
development in agriculture combining biology, data science and applied mathematics.
As a Team Leader, you will lead a multi-disciplinary team of computational
scientists in transforming data (e.g., environmental, crop performance,
genetics) into knowledge to enable decision support across the Seeds pipeline.
You will work in close partnerships with experts in breeding and commercial
teams, computational biologists, and external partners to deliver innovative
modeling solutions in alignment with key business priorities.
Essential Duties &
Responsibilities:
Lead the RTP Modeling
team, providing innovative mathematical modeling and data science
competencies to the organization in support of trait discovery, the
end-to-end breeding pipeline, crop protection R&D, and commercial
needs.Provide technical
leadership, direction and management of a team of multi-disciplinary
computational scientists to deliver and apply data science and
mathematical modeling capabilities to enable data-driven decision support
for Syngenta R&D.Guide the
development and deployment at scale of biological system modeling combined
with data science approaches to enhance decision support for key business
processes.Drive the
innovation within Syngenta in the area of mathematical modeling, machine
learning and data science research, promote scientific excellence of the
RTP Modeling team, maintain a network within the scientific community in
these fields, and bring new concepts into Syngenta R&D in a timely
fashion to support our industrial innovation leadership.Build effective
partnerships with leaders in Seeds and CP R&D and Commercial to enable
delivery of model-driven and data-driven innovations in alignment with
business needs.As a member of the
Biology Modeling Leadership team, contribute to the development and
implementation of a predictive modeling strategy for mathematical modeling
and data science in support of Seeds and CP R&D.Provide research
subject matter expertise and prototyping in the development of decision
support tools embedding biological modeling or data science in partnership
with the internal R&D organization on information technologies.Provide scientific
leadership and technical knowledge to scout and evaluate new opportunities
in data science and modeling.Promote the use
and application of mathematical modeling and data science capabilities for
biological problems through solid cross-functional partnerships.Skills:
Ph.D. or
equivalent experience in Data Science, Applied Mathematics,
Biomathematics, Bioengineering or a related field.Understanding of
applied mathematics, modeling, computational science, data science and
plant biology required for the accountabilities above.Understanding of
the Seeds and CP business to develop appropriate modeling or data science
research programs and strategy.5+ years of
experience applying mathematical modeling in a scientific/R&D
environment, preferably in agriculture or other life sciences.Experience applying data science in a
scientific/R&D environment is highly preferred.Experience working
effectively in multi-disciplinary teams.Experience working
with the end-to-end modeling process, including problem formulation and
model development, calibration, validation, application and deployment.Additional Knowledge,
Skills, Traits & Abilities:
Proven leadership
skills, in particular in partnering, influencing, and working with global
cross functional and cross cultural teams in the absence of a direct
functional management relationship.Demonstrated
proficiency in communicating, planning, and coordinating team activities
across diverse functional and administrative boundaries.Demonstrated
ability to manage multiple projects and priorities.Demonstrated
success in working in a range of research environments and across a
breadth of modeling or data science projects.Staff performance
evaluation; development and administration of individual development plans
within an organization framework.Interpersonal and
conflict management skills.Excellent
communication skills and demonstrated effectiveness in collaboration. Syngenta
