Molecular Plant Pathologist / Seed Health Research Scientist – #01GVO
Monsanto has an immediate need for a Molecular Plant Pathologist to join its Global Quality Technology Integration Team in St Louis, Missouri. This role will plan and perform novel research and development efforts towards MVS seed health assay development and/or improvement. The successful candidate should have a Ph.D. in Plant Pathology and experience in molecular biology. A demonstrated track record of successful project initiation and completion is required for this position. Candidate must have a very strong technical background, strong communication and interpersonal skills, excellent problem solving abilities, and a strong commitment to achieving results in the context of an interdisciplinary project team. Key Responsibilities:Develop, validate and implement new technologies that enhance Seed Health Quality testing with a primary focus on the use of advanced molecular techniquesInvestigate, optimize and develop innovative seed health assays for the detection of seed-borne pathogens.Conduct research activities with the goal of practical implementation in Seed Health testing labs worldwideAssist the Seed Health testing group with routine protocol troubleshooting.Develop project proposals, including cost estimates and financial justifications.Initiate and manage internal and external research collaborations to create and validate new technologies.Design and execute research experiments in an efficient manner to meet project deadlines.Responsible for statistical analyses of results obtained in internal and external projects and subsequent decision making, including oral and written communications both internally and externally in formal reports, presentations, and postersAdhere to all safety and stewardship policies and actively participates in Monsanto ESH ProgramQualifications:Required Skills/Experience:Ph.D. in Plant Pathology OR MS in Plant Pathology with 4+ years post-graduate experience in an industry or academic settingStrong experience in developing molecular assays (PCR, RPA, LAMP, NGS) for pathogen detection. Incumbent must have a proven track record of research success from project ideation through implementation. A working knowledge of Seed Health or Seed Quality Assurance testing methods is desirable.Strong skills in experimental design, analysis of results using various ???omics approaches and large data setsStrong technical and scientific writing (papers, reviews, or grant applications) Ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific journal articles, technical procedures, government regulations, and seed testing procedures. Functional and technical proficiency in seed technology or other related agriculture experience.Result-oriented leadership capability.Excellent communications skills in English, both verbal and in writing, including the capability to clearly present information and influence or persuade others through oral or written communications.Decision making and problem solving skills. The ability to take action in solving problems while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of relevant issues.Capacity to working with people and lead people in such a manner as to build high morale and group commitments to achieve goals and project objectives jointly.Ability to work in a fast-paced global and multi-cultural seed company.Appropriate use of statistical analysis in problem solving and decision making.Knowledge of or interest in process improvement tools like Six Sigma and LEAN.Knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools.Ability to work with and often lead cross-functional teams as it relates to developing business strategy, long range planning, and project management.Apply for this job.
