National Director, Farm Program
American Humane seeks a highly motivated National Director to drive growth and broaden the reach of American Humane Certified . This position will serve as head of and manage the American Humane Farm Program- acting as spokesperson and working with a variety of external constituents, assuming primary responsibility for budget management, developing and leading strategy around Farm Program expansion efforts, and designing and implementing marketing campaigns to that end. This position is based at American Humane's national headquarters in Washington, DC and reports directly to the Chief Operating Officer. Position summary:The National Director, American Humane Farm Program serves as program leader for the first and largest third party farm animal welfare audit program in the nation, the American Humane Certified program, under American Humane s Farm Program. The person in this position is responsible for driving program growth, recruiting new producers and broadening program reach while maintaining strong relationships with existing certified producers. Responsibilities:Provide overall leadership to American Humane's Farm Program and staffServe as national and international spokesperson for the program, reflecting the mission and values of American HumaneEnsure program expansion across species to additional producers and processorsWork to differentiate AH and the American Humane Certified program from other third party certification programs and welfare organizations with food agendasSeek to educate farmers/ranchers as well as retailers on the value of third party certification of good animal welfare practices and to educate consumers and children on the taste, nutritional and quality benefits of humanely raised foodFoster internal communication and collaboration to ensure successful partnerships, including with other AH leadership in order to foster cross-programmatic opportunitiesAccountable for fiscal management of the program; responsible for creating, monitoring and possessing a thorough understanding of program budget; controls for variances and cash flow, balancing revenue and expendituresInitiate and oversee, in connection with Director Farm of Operations, all program contractual agreements with certified producers and with manufacturers in teh Seal of Approval programSelect annual trade shows and industry meetings to attend to maximize opportunities to meet influential people and companies in order to increase exposure for the programSeek and deliver public speaking engagements, radio and TV interviews and uses social networking, coordinating public appearances with AH s communications strategy and Communications departmentMeet with major certified producers annuallyProvide stories, data and content for use on website, appeals, funding proposals, projects and general public informationLead by example, adapting to a continually evolving environment and helping others thrive in a results-oriented workplaceEnsure that all program and informational materials and web site are up to date and reflective of best practicesMonitor national and international farm animal health and welfare trends as well as legislative and regulatory activity and keeps senior management updated on emerging issuesBuild and maintain a deep and broad network of relationships to strengthen and grow the American Humane Certified Program Essential experience, knowledge, skills and abilities:Bachelor s degree required, advanced degree in related field preferredAbility to run a successful business or program, including budget management requiredDiversity of marketing and sales experience strongly desiredAdditional experience in some or all of the following fields highly preferred: agricultural animal health and welfare, agriculture industry (including allied groups), food supply chain, government (state or national), principles and practices associated with animal welfare including animal husbandry or humane educationExcellent verbal and written communication skills; active listeningAdept at building collaborative relationships and demonstrating diplomacy with diverse constituencies, including farmers/ranchers, trade organizations, retailers, food services and academicsDemonstrated ability to provide effective and timely leadership decisionsAbility to work with team members to implement annual program goalsGrowth oriented and dynamic; self-disciplinedMaintain professional demeanor at all times Direct reports: Yes Physical demands and work environment:Position is based at American Humane s national headquarters in Washington, DC no exceptionsExtensive travel, potentially to remote locationsExposure to barns with intensive animal productionExposure to bio secure environments, requiring donning of protective gear Employees are expected to adhere to all organizational policies and to act as role models, demonstrating American Humane s core values: CompassionAccountabilityRespect for allLoyalty to missionSustainabilityHonesty, integrity, trust American Humane is an Equal Opportunity Employer and encourages diverse candidates to applyApply for this job.
