SUMMARYThe Operator Trainee observes and assists the Operator I in the start-up,processing, and shut down of Calcium Ammonium Nitrate-17% Nitrogen (CAN-17) andLiquid Ammonium Phosphate (10-34-0) production process; also observes andassists the Lab Analyst as assigned. This individual is responsible for maintaininga clean and safe environment throughout the production plant areas at alltimes. A successful incumbent will learn about plant activities and purposes inorder to advance to an Operator I position. RESPONSIBILITIESObserves the operation of CAN 17 process area;assists in coordinating transfer of limestone, ammonium nitrate, nitric acid,and ammonia into designated area.Observes the operation of Liquid AmmoniaPhosphate (10-34-0) area; assists in coordinating transfer of anhydrous ammonia(NH3) and super phosphoric acid (SPA) into designated area.Observes and assists the Lab Analyst to gainknowledge in conducting and analyzing chemical and physical laboratory tests;assists in testing in-process fertilizer samples for quality control.Monitors system pressures and tank levelsaccording to Standard Operating Procedures (SOP); assists in gathering readingsincluding, but not limited to specific gravity (SPG) and pH to ensure productis on grade.Observes and assists in startup and shut downof CAN-17 and 10-34-0 production processes. Records operating data such asprocess conditions, test results, and instrument readings into log book eachshift.Responsible for cleaning up any spilledproduct throughout the plant; uses a broom to sweep product from stairs,loading areas, and under plant equipment; moves large spills to designated areausing front-end loader. Assists operators with lock out/tag outprocedures, makes list of all tools needed for maintenance jobs, and advisesappropriate personnel of any special procedures such as confined space entrynecessary for repairs. Performs routine preventative maintenance (PM)on equipment utilized including, but not limited to, routine visual checks,checking fluid levels, and ensuring all safety items such as lights, horn, andseat belts are working properlyResponsible for maintaining a clean and organized work area; cleans equipment,files and organizes SOP and shift logs.Maintains safe working environment bycomplying with all rules and regulations, and continuously practices safetywhile performing duties. Ensures that all personnel, truck drivers, and vendorsare maintaining a safe working environment at all times. Works rotating shifts including days, nights,weekends and holidays. Must be organized and able to balance andmanage multiple tasks, priorities and deadlines.Team player with strong work ethic. Ability to arrive at scheduled time and beprepared for work. Ability to operate a front-end loader, forklift, track mobile, and/or other equipment as neededPhysical Requirements: This job requires theability to work in excess of eight hours per day to include weekends andoff-duty hours to reach operational goals and compliance requirements. Jobduties may require the ability to climb stairs, climb ladders, bend, stoop,reach, lift, grip, push, pull, move and/or carry tools and/or equipment whichmay be in excess of 50 pounds. In order to perform the duties of this job, theincumbent may be required to walk in excess of 350 yards to reach areas acrossthe facility. Finger dexterity may be required to operate various hand toolsand/or calculator, etc. This individual uses frequent repetitive motions withhands and/or feet to complete job duties; may be required to walk on uneven orslippery surfaces and stand for extended periods of time. The incumbent mayperform job duties from a ladder, scaffolding, or elevated place asnecessary.
Working in this plant operations environmentrequires the use of safety equipment to include, but not limited to safetyglasses, hearing protection, steel-toed boots, hard hat, respirator, faceshield, welding hood/gloves, acid gear, fire-retardant clothing, and companyissued uniforms in designated areas. This individual may be subject tovariations in noise levels and temperature changes due to weather conditions.While performing the duties of this job, this individual is frequently exposedto an outdoor environment, moving mechanical parts, fumes or airborneparticles, toxic or caustic chemicals.
