Job Description: Orchard and Market Worker, Black Rock Orchard About Black Rock Orchard: Black Rock Orchard is a 100 acre family farm located in Lineboro, MD, Carroll County. Our main farm is in Maryland, but our driveway is in Pennsylvania. We have an original stone Mason Dixon marker in our plums. Black Rock Orchard grows a wide variety of tree fruit, including apples, pears, peaches, berries and Spring/late Fall heirloom and specialty greenhouse tomatoes. In 2017, we harvested our first winter hardy figs in a new high tunnel. Black Rock Orchard farms approximately 100 acres of fruit. We sell all our fruit at farmers markets in the Washington and Baltimore metro area. Black Rock Orchard has an opening for an orchard worker who has interest and experience in crop production. In addition to general fieldwork, the worker would attend at least one market a week in the DC metro area. Attending a market requires driving a box truck to the DC metro area, and setting up a stand to sell our fruit. Field work includes general orchard fruit production tasks, including pruning, picking, sorting fruit, mowing, some herbicide spraying. Greenhouse tasks include specialty tomato cultivation, maintenance and harvesting. This job is a combination crop production and market position. We are expanding some of our fruit and greenhouse production. We will prefer an individual with interest or experience in high intensity fruit production and greenhouse technology. Benefits include insurance, retirement and vacation after probationary period. Compensation depends on experience and qualifications. This position is appropriate for an individual who is able to work in all areas of orchard work including field work, planning, marketing. Daily field work and market responsibilities would both be essential parts of the job. The workweek is 5 days (42.5 hour) which includes weekend shifts. Applicants must be in excellent physical condition with an agricultural degree or proven experience in sustainable crop production and an interest in marketing. Work references and driving history required. Black Rock Orchard is a drug free and no tobacco work place. Tobacco is toxic to greenhouse crops.
