SUMMARY The Patent Agent / Intellectual Property Manager is a non-attorney role that is responsible for managing Simplot's global IP portfolio which includes all aspects of patent prosecution preparation, drafting U.S. and international patent applications, and conducting patent due diligence for freedom-to-operate assessments, acquisitions, and licensing matters. This role is also instrumental in coordinating and managing U.S. and foreign trademark filings and portfolios and conducting preliminary trademark searches. The role will have significant direct client facing interactions and will play an integral role in enhancing the business partnerships with diverse internal and external clients.RESPONSIBILITIESConducting patentability assessments based on business-completed Invention Disclosure Forms. Evaluate new inventions and develop comprehensive domestic and international protection strategies in an efficient and cost effective manner. Draft and prosecute patent applications, assist in the preparation of opinions and conduct patentability and prior art searches and complete related administrative filing paperwork.Conducting freedom-to-operate assessments and assist in competitor IP landscape Watches (patent and trademark.)Engage with business IP Committees to proactively gain insight into progress of R&D projects within Simplot and with Simplot collaborations.Manage an extensive global patent docket. Coordinate matters with outside counsel in the U.S. and international law firms. REQUIREMENTSPh.D. or minimum Masters' Degree in biotechnology, chemistry, life sciences or a related field.Registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office required. At least 3 years patent experience in a national law firm and/or significant in-house experience with a biotechnology, pharmaceutical or food/agribusiness company. This position requires extensive knowledge of legal research techniques and preparation of complex legal documents related to US and International patent preparation, prosecution, and preparation of legal opinions. Assignments are typically varied and complex in nature related to diversity of business interest, such as life science, food, & agribusiness. Combination of education, training and/or experience will be considered for this position.ADDITIONAL SKILL Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Strong interpersonal skills. Proficient analytical and research skills. Demonstrated achievement where initiative, follow-through and attention to detail is essential. Must be a self-starter who anticipates issues and interacts well in unplanned situations. Presentation of professional attitude and demeanor. Computer literate with ability to utilize word processing, database and spreadsheet software applications. Ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously, work under pressure and still maintain normal workflow.
