Principal Scientist – Innovation
Position PurposeCargill?s approach to innovation is to build a pipeline of projects in 3 areas; Core, Adjacent and Transformative Innovation. The Protein Group has an opportunity available for a US based Principal Scientist – Innovation, this role is accountable for identifying adjacent and transformative innovation projects across all protein types and all channels. The role will use consumer insights, industry information, and category data to fill the adjacent and transformative innovation pipelines to drive bottom line growth for the business. The Principal Scientist ? Innovation is expected to:?1) Assess feasibility and develop technologies in the pre-charter phase to create an ongoing innovation pipeline of new products and services to meet the growth objectives of Cargill Protein, 2) Act as a business partner to identify and prioritize new product opportunities and next generation customer solutions, and 3) Collaborate across Cargill Enterprises to create an innovative advantage. The ideal candidate will possess high integrity, courage, and character as personal traits.?Principal Accountabilities?50% Pre-charter project validation: Identify, develop and conduct work on high value innovation opportunities for Cargill Protein, with a focus on front end innovation research to drive growth through Innovation. This will include the design and development of methodologies, tools, and processes for conducting complex projects, as well as knowledge of existing Cargill Protein Group equipment, capabilities and product portfolios. This will also include technical scouting; transfer of technologies from adjacent industries that could be used in Protein. The successful candidate will have in depth experience in conducting research, risk analysis, and scalability.20% Prioritize innovation projects based on Protein strategy. Work with Marketing, Consumer Insights, Business teams and Operations on consumer insights and/or customer insights led innovation through the use of consumer and marketplace insights & trends, unmet industry needs, and future capability needs. Value will be measured on success rate of projects through the innovation pipeline as well as value from new products delivered annually20% Work with marketing, business teams and RD&I teams to charter projects and successfully transfer project work once chartered. Serve as consultant for project team on an as needed basis.10% Strategic collaboration across channels: Collaborate with other channels and Cargill business areas for value added protein innovation and creative consumer and/or customer solutions.Equal Opportunity Employer, including Disability/Vet.Skills:
Required QualificationsBachelor's degree in food science or related field6+ years combined professional experience in R&D??A minimum of 3 years of experience with project management?Proven ability to turn ideas into commercialized products (successful innovation product launch)Demonstrated proficiency in working with ambiguous directionExperience working successfully in a matrix organizationDesign of ExperimentsDemonstrated financial and business acumenThis position requires a high level of proficiency using Microsoft Office tools and business reporting systemsStrong organizational and accuracy skillsExperience working with cross-functional teams (marketing, insights, sales, ops, FSQR, multiple proteins)Ability to manage multiple complex projects simultaneously?Excellent communication and conflict management skills required?Good decision-making; ability to prioritize goals and work?Strategic thinker with ability to build effective plans to support strategic initiatives??Must be tech-savvy and comfortable with evolving business-critical technology?Occasional travel; up to 20%Preferred QualificationsAdvanced degree (MS or PhD) in meat science, food science or related fieldExperience leading teamsOperations experienceCareer DevelopmentThe Principal Scientist – Innovation will gain experience in project prioritization and portfolio management.?
