Protein Evolution and Engineering Lead* – #01R0Q
We are seeking a talented Protein Evolution and Engineering Lead to join our biotechnology research team near the Charles River in Cambridge, Massachusetts to lead protein evolution development. Our scientific leaders are dedicated to the discovery, development and commercialization of next-generation traits for modern agriculture that provide useful and sustainable solutions for our customers. Key to the design of effective agronomic traits for corn, soy, cotton and other crops are the identification, testing, and optimization of native proteins from microbes and plants. We are seeking computationally-oriented, evolutionary protein scientists interested in tackling the formidable challenge of high throughput discovery, optimization and directed evolution of proteins aimed at improving crop traits. The origin and properties of present-day proteins can largely be attributed to their evolutionary histories that involved mutation, combinatorial shuffling, selection and coevolution with interacting partners. This leadership position will leverage phylogenetics, signatures of selection and other proteogenomics tools to develop strategies, workflows and technologies to identify potential trait-relevant proteins and variants that modify or enhance properties such as activity, affinity, specificity and stability. They will work closely with teams of scientists focused on using structure-based protein design, protein engineering, and directed evolution to generate desirable molecular functions. In leading development of our protein evolution toolkit, you'll be tackling the full gamut of technical challenges: expression, solubility, localization, activity, substrate specificity, product profile and more. As such, you'll need to bring a diverse repertoire of solutions to bear on these problems from genomics, metagenomics, and ancestral protein reconstruction to directed evolution, assay development, and more. Responsibilities include:Leading protein evolution strategies by influencing key stakeholders both inside and outside of the company including R&D, Commercial/Sales, Regulatory, Quality, and Manufacturing, and academic collaboratorsLeveraging evolutionary signatures in proteins, genomes, and metagenomes to aid assessment of their functional importance in specific processes relevant to potential agronomic traitsDeveloping and evaluating new technologies related to protein evolution and engineering and directing team efforts advancing development/technology programs Applying ancestral protein reconstruction, coevolutionary principles, directed evolution, and other approaches to protein engineering with the goal of improving protein expression, solubility, thermal stability, binding specificity, affinity maturation and activityGenerating intelligently-designed, high-diversity protein libraries for combinatorial directed evolution approachesScientifically linking biological meaning, computational protein design and lab-based experimental protein engineering and testing methods to develop meaningful screening and selection assaysCollaborating on multidisciplinary teams and communicating effectively and proactively in a fast-paced cross-functional matrix environmentQualifications:Required Skills/Experience:Minimum of Master's Degree Minimum of 5 or more years of technical experience in protein science Strong understanding of protein evolution, bioinformatics and evolutionary genomics Industry or post-doc experience in molecular biology, protein expression and/or purification techniques Experience building consensus and leading teams through influence while working with strict deadlines in a highly demanding and agile environment Demonstrated ability to build relationships, collaborate and influence Exceptional communication skills, with a proven ability to convey complex ideas in a clear, precise, and actionable manner to diverse audiences Ability to travel independently (domestic and international) approximately 5% of the time Desired Skills/Experience: PhD in Biotechnology, Molecular Biology, Protein Biochemistry, Protein Design, Evolutionary Biology or closely related degree Five or more years of prior experience as a direct supervisor Experience in protein directed evolution Demonstrated success with multiple directed evolution platforms such as phage display, yeast display, and/or mRNA display technologies Track-record of creatively defining key results and driving technical business solutions both independently and through cross-functional project teams Experience with protein engineering, structure-based protein design, and/or automating protein workflows Experience employing hidden Markov model (HMM) comparisons for sequence analysis and structure prediction, algorithms for remote homology detection, protein classification tools, and algorithms to analyze relationships in large sequence datasets Demonstrated creativity in defining challenging exploratory projects and developing solutions Experience in functional protein expression in microbial hosts and/or experience with entomopathogenic microbes, insects and/or plants Experience with high-throughput in vivo, in vitro and biophysical assays to characterize engineered proteins Bayer successfully completed the acquisition of Monsanto in June 2018, bringing together Monsanto???s leadership in seeds and plant traits with Bayer???s leadership in chemical and biological crop protection.
