Research Associate, Core Field Support

Job Purpose This position will provide leadership for regulatory compliance for field testing of regulated transgenes and be responsible for successfully executing critical field and/or greenhouse activities for the Johnston Field Research Center (JFRC; primarily with corn and soybeans).
  Duties/Responsibilities
1. Effectively function as a Primary Regulatory Contact for JFRC which includes: ??? Day-to-day management of regulated field trials ??? Maintaining USDA Compliance Notebooks ??? Be point of contact to ensure compliance (includes compliance training for JFRC staff as needed) ??? Input information into Compliance website (HUB/BTM) ??? Conduct required field inspections (current year trials as well as post-trial monitoring) ??? Participate in any site inspections by USDA, et al. 2. Execute field and/or greenhouse experiments according to protocols to meet established deadlines, exercising independent judgment and discretion as appropriate. Field work will be on the Johnston Farm but likely includes outlying locations as well. Greenhouse work will be in Controlled Environments at Johnston. 3. Maintain, organize and summarize data associated with field and/or greenhouse experiments. 4. Organize and supervise work of Research Assistants and/or temporary/contract employees while ensuring work is performed in safe and efficient manner. 5. Provide support for new, unproven techniques/systems to collect field and/or greenhouse data relative to phenotyping plant responses to various environmental conditions 6. Serve on cross-functional teams to ensure all operations are completed in an efficient and cost effective manner, consistent with DuPont Core Values (Safety, Ethics, Respect for People and Environment Stewardship) and/or to operate under the Research Management System (RMS) environment, with a continuous improvement philosophy. Qualifications:Knowledge, Skills Competencies and Experience Minimum educational requirement is an Associate degree in agronomy, horticulture, entomology, plant pathology or closely related field.  Experience and/or aptitude for using field research equipment, including tools/techniques to collect specific physiological and/or environmental measurements is highly desired.  Additional specific skills needed include: excellent computer skills; ability to quickly learn new skills; strong self-motivation; and leadership capabilities to motivate others, initiate projects, make decisions, and effectively solve problems.  Excellent interpersonal/communication skills are required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment and effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people. The ability to lift 50 lbs and to work outside in varying environmental and ergonomic conditions is required.   Problem Solving 1. Work with other researchers to correctly identify any report abnormalities in plant phenotypes or test methods associated with testing of regulated transgenes per USDA requirements 2. Diagnose problems with field and/or greenhouse equipment used for data collection ??? some of which may be proof-of-concept which may require feedback to developers   Decision Making 1. Anticipate temporary labor demands as key input for labor pool and scheduling to meet project demands. Essential for smooth workflow and timely completion of operations. 2. Monitor quality of field and/or greenhouse trials throughout the year, utilize available tools and leverage available knowledge to characterize any data quality or quantity concerns
