Research Scientist, Phenotyping (PhD)
The position will design and implement complex research experiments using the latest geospatial, imaging and remote sensing techniques and tools towards the goal of high-throughput trait phenotyping developing solutions for crop breeding and predictive agriculture. The position will require synthesis of the current technical solutions in the discipline to develop analytical algorithms for reliable quantification of plant traits. The ideal candidate will have expertise in remote sensing, photogrammetry, image processing, deep learning, and statistical genetics. The position will involve close collaboration with a dynamic team of robotics engineers, computer scientists, software programmers, image analysis experts, plant breeders and crop physiologists. The successful candidate will coordinate and collaborate closely with scientists across a global network of research sites. Intermittent international travel will be required. Curate and process geospatial, crop phenotype and image data.Development of analytic algorithms for the prediction of crop phenotypes from image and sensor data.Statistical evaluation of feature data from precision phenotyping with the purpose of validating against trait targets.Drive disruptive change throughout the organization to further the adoption of novel technologies.Communicate clearly, and concisely using both written and verbal skills with colleagues and collaborators. Promote positive and professional attitude and cooperative work relationships.Serve on teams for hardware and software development, crop modeling and trait validation activities and provide critical feedback throughout the development process.Stay abreast of relevant technologies via a combination of scientific reading, attendance at scientific conferences, technology scouting, connecting with vendors and potential public and private collaborators/service providers and leverage knowledge into product development efforts. Qualifications:PhD in remote sensing, statistics, plant or animal breeding, ecology, genetics, or related discipline with at least 3 years of intensive training in statistical methods. Demonstrated proficiency using Phython, R, or similar programming languages to manipulate large datasets for custom analysis. Strong background applying and interpreting statistical analysis of large, unbalanced datasets. Understanding and experience using statistical software for data analysis, data mining and prediction is required.Inquisitive nature with the interest, ability, drive and determination to constantly evaluate, refine and assist in deployment of novel (or existing) phenotyping techniques. Demonstrated ability to work in dynamic scientific teams, strong communication skills, and demonstrated ability to contribute to complex research projects performed under tight deadlines. Knowledge or experience with project management. Familiarity with electronics, machine vision systems, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and/or image analysis is highly desired.
