Research Scientist, Spectral Imaging (PhD)
DuPont Pioneer, headquartered in Des Moines, Iowa, is the world's leading developer and supplier of advanced plant genetics, agronomic support, and services to farmers. Innovative and customer-focused, Pioneer seeks to increase farmer productivity and profitability, and to develop sustainable agricultural systems for people everywhere. Increasing populations, changing economies, and limited cultivatable land are significant factors driving Pioneer to use the broad application of plant science to improve the value generated from each field. The Research Scientist plans and conducts comprehensive research programs which further the development of plant phenotyping in controlled and field environments. Identifies internal and external customer needs for advanced imaging technologies and processing that increase understanding of plant health. Increased precision, lower cost, higher throughput and increased knowledge of phenotyping are expected. Responsibilities – Works in conjunction with Senior Technology Leader to establish project goals consistent with business unit goals which reflect internal and external customer needs.
Provides independent management, scientific leadership and creativity when initiating, designing, and executing research within/across projects. Monitors research progress and meets with participating researchers to identify problems and opportunities impacting the business unit. Remains current on new technology by participating in professional meetings, career development activities and by encouraging others to bring information into research activities. Communicates with Research Leadership (i.e. Research Coordinator, Sr. Scientist, Research Fellow, and Research Director), Business Unit contacts, and external collaborators on progress of enabling technologies opportunities and makes recommendations. Organizes and supervises the work of other employees. Implements and monitors safe working practices. Develops and administers annual budgets. Other Duties:
Controls, maintains, and is accountable for sensors, information resources and imaging systems. Serves on teams appropriate to cross project research initiatives. Contributes to scientific publications, conferences and patent applications. PROBLEM SOLVING
Ensures that support resources are sufficient to meet research projects goals and develop plans for alternative solutions. Select and develop solutions to product/scientific problems (ex. choosing appropriate technology to solve research problems) and interpersonal issues (ex. Internal and external collaborators, direct reports). DECISION MAKING
Determines steps to develop an enabling technology and where to conduct the experiments while staying within budget. Decides on the best enabling technology to use to achieve the goal. Qualifications: PhD in an imaging analytics, chemometrics, phenomics or related scientific field and minimum of 4-6 years industry related experience. Post-doctoral experience may serve as industry related experience. Knowledge of imaging including instrument design/specification, and standardization/calibration.
Demonstrated practical application of predictive analytics. Supervision/management, communication and interpersonal skills. Demonstrated disruptive technology adoption.Computer programming skills are strongly desired. R, Python, C++ or MatLab.DuPont is an equal opportunity employer and an E-Verify employer
