Scientist I – Watermelon Molecular Breeding – West Sacramento, CA
BASF Corporation seeks a Scientist I (Watermelon Molecular Breeding) (WestSacramento, CA): Partner withintegrated watermelon breeding programs through analyses and interpretation of genotypicdata in defined research projects. Facilitate global watermelon breedingefforts to develop superior varieties by identifying and implementing molecularmarkers. Develop genetic maps and identify quantitative trait loci (QTL)underlying complex traits. Analyze and interpret genetic variation in naturalpopulations for designing novel breeding schemes. Initiate and executeinnovative applied research proposals to implement genome-wide and traitmarkers to accelerate and improve breeding cycles. Responsible for theexecution of MB projects activities to ensure high-quality results withindefined time planning and budget. Co-ordinate MB-related activities withmultiple involved disciplines, such as breeding, genotyping services,phytopathology, statistics, and bioinformatics. Perform laboratory tasks, suchas tissue sampling, DNA extraction, and PCR. Collect, store, and analyzephenotypic data from the field and greenhouses. Keep accurate records, prepareand present research reports to stakeholders. Trains and supervises a labtechnician and an intern. 10% of domestic andinternational travel. MINIMUMREQUIREMENTS: Requires a Master's degree in Genetics,Plant Breeding, Biology, or related fields and 5 years of experience invegetable seeds industry. Requires 5 years of experience in: genomics,bioinformatics, statistics, and plant breeding; statistical genetics (e.g.,mixed linear models and population genetics); QTL analysis software programs,such as JoinMap and MapQTL; large sequencing data analyses using programminglanguage, such as R; ability to generate and implement trait markers in plantbreeding programs; molecular genetics techniques, such as DNA extraction,primer design, PCR, qPCR, electrophoresis, and genotyping platforms; ability toinitiate, execute, and complete research projects independently in a fast paceenvironment. Must have evidence of contribution to scientific knowledge in formof publications and patents, and the development of commercial products such ascrop varieties.
