Area Cooperative Extension Advisor Viticulture

The Cooperative Extension (CE) advisor (an academic appointment with research and extension responsibilities) for viticulture will conduct a locally based extension, education and applied research program to develop best practices for economic table grape vineyard management and to minimize the environmental effects of production and cultural practices. Work will cover a broad range of areas considering the impact on fruit quality and yield in relation to: vine growth and development, table grape production, irrigation/water management, vine nutrition, rootstock evaluation, vineyard management systems, automation and mechanization, crop/fruit development, integrated pest and disease management (including soil pests) and post-harvest handling. Key stakeholders include the California Table Grape Commission, commercial farms (both large and small), pest control advisers, allied industries, public agencies, and consumers. The primary geographic area of responsibility for the position is Kern County but the CE advisor will also be expected to collaborate with CE advisors in neighboring counties, particularly Tulare and Kings Counties to address complex issues through a team approach.   This position is co-funded by the California Table Grape Commission for a period of five years with intent for co-funded renewal


Pest Control Advisor (PCA)

 Position Summary:The PCA provides recommendations for the agriculture use of pest management materials, including chemical pesticides, organic pesticides and beneficial insects that are environmentally and ethically sound. Job Duties and Responsibilities: Scout agriculture fields to determine and diagnose any disease or pests that may affect the crop for yield lossDetermine and provide recommendations on proper treatment of diseased and/or infested cropsCoordinate with production and marketing teams to schedule pesticide applications and communicate quality issuesSupervise the scheduling of all chemical applications both in-house and by third party contractorsSet up in-house sprays prior to plantingCommunicate and coordinate with production, harvesting, marketing, safety, and food safety teams to ensure information on treated fields is disseminated accurately and properlyComplete and send out a daily report of all spray jobs scheduled including method of application, pre-harvest interval, and re-entry datesOversee and order inventory of in-house chemicals as neededReview all pesticide application invoices for accounting verificationWork with marketing and production teams to achieve the highest product quality standardsWork with safety and food safety teams to maintain a company safety culture at the highest levelEnsure compliance with all state and federal regulations including the Department of Pesticide Regulations Physical demands and travel The employee is required to stand; walk; sit; climb stairs; talk and listen for extended amounts of time.
