Agricultural Specialist in Department of Agriculture

 Agricultural Specialist in Department of Agriculture Position Description:  Oversee daily care and management of the Fort Hays State University swine herd and sheep and goat flocks.  The herdsman is expected to work with faculty and industry professionals to develop and implement nutrition and herd health programs for the livestock.  Experience and/or expertise in farrowing, lambing and kidding is an essential component of this position.  This position has an expectation of developing a protocol for maintaining clean and neat facilities.  An essential component of the position will be working with faculty to coordinate livestock for use in laboratory sessions and livestock judging contests.  The successful candidate will be required to schedule and mentor student workers to care for livestock and facilities.  The successful candidate will be managing approximately 40 sows, 70 ewes and 20 does.  This is a full-time, 12-month position. Minimum Qualifications:  High School diploma or GED equivalency and two years of farm experience or two years of post-secondary education pursuing an agricultural degree. Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors Degree in Animal Science.Strong commitment to undergraduate education, possess strong communication skills, and be able to work well with students and department faculty and staff. Experience in the swine, sheep and/or goat industries.Knowledge of herd health protocols and/or a strong background in livestock nutrition. Successfully raising and showing high quality livestock. Experience on a collegiate livestock judging team. Appointment Date:  July, 2019 Application Deadline: Immediately after the offer, acceptance of the position, and completion of a criminal background check. Salary: 15.75 per hour Benefits: Competitive benefit package http://www.fhsu.edu/humanresourceoffice/Prospective-Employees/ Application Process:  To apply for this position, please visit https://fhsu.wd1.myworkdayjobs.com/CAREERS.  Only electronic applications submitted through the webpage will be accepted. Required Application Documents:  Applicants should submit a cover letter, resume, and names and contact information for three professional references.
