Seed Health Research Scientist – #01CVW
Monsanto is currently seeking a motivated Research Scientist to join its team in Woodland, California. This role will plan and perform novel research and development efforts towards MVS seed health assay improvement or development. Individual will utilize internal and external collaborations to maintain MVS seed health as the industry leader in pathogen detection. Currently, there are five Quality Assurance Seed Health labs worldwide that perform more than 240,000 tests per year on the 25 key crops produced by MVS. Targeted organisms include Clavibacter michiganensis subsp. michiganensis, Acidovorax avenae subsp. citrulli, Xanthomonas campestris pv. campestris, Squash mosaic virus, Lettuce mosaic virus, Tobamoviruses of solanaceous and cucurbitaceous crops, Alternaria on carrots, etc. Responsibilities:Identify research opportunities based on business need and literature review focusing on improvement, development, or automation of seed health assays for the detection of seed-borne pathogens.Develop project proposals, including cost estimates and financial justifications.Design and execute experiments in an efficient manner to execute research in a timely fashion to meet project deadlines.Assure research is conducted, analyzed, and concluded using sound scientific principles.Assure research activities are conducted with the goal of practical implementation in Seed Health testing labs worldwideReport experimental results both internally and externally in formal reports, presentations, and posters.Initiate and manage internal and external research collaborations to create and validate new technologies.Assist the Seed Health testing group with routine protocol troubleshooting.Adhere to all safety and stewardship policiesQualifications:Skills Requirements The successful candidate will require the ability to read, analyze and interpret scientific journal articles, technical procedures, government regulations, and seed testing procedures. Ability to define a problem, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions. Excellent communications skills including the capability to clearly present information through oral or written communications. Demonstrated experience in publication-quality scientific writing. Decision making and problem solving skills. The ability to take action in solving problems while exhibiting judgment and a realistic understanding of relevant issues. Ability to work in a fast-paced global and multi-cultural environment. Appropriate use of statistical analysis in problem solving and decision making. Knowledge of or interest in process improvement tools like Six Sigma and LEAN. Knowledge of basic bioinformatics tools. Ability to work with and often lead cross-functional teams as it relates to developing business strategy, long range planning, and project management. Education and Experience: Ph.D in Plant Pathology with 0-2 years experience or MS in Plant Pathology with 3+ years experience. Incumbent should have experience in the development of molecular assays for pathogen detection. Incumbent must have a proven track record of research success from project ideation through implementation. A working knowledge of Seed Health or Seed Quality Assurance testing methods is desirable.Apply for this job.
