Senior Plant Breeder-Spinach
SUMMARY: The Senior Plant Breeder is responsible for developing, implementing, and coordinating research and development activities in assigned species. Objectives of the program are determined by the Senior Plant Breeder, the Product Manager, and the Director of Research in coordination with the business plan for each crop. The Objectives are defined in the Project Definition Reports. Basic function of the Senior Plant Breeder is to develop state-of-the art proprietary products for SAI Seed. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES*: Responsible for developing elite competitive material in accordance with defined objectives considering yield, appeal, disease resistance, and production capability.Responsible for maintaining and updating the Project Definition Report annually and being prepared to present the program in this format once a year.Responsible for writing compliant G2 Nominations and working with the product managers to supply all necessary information needed for G3 Nomination and G4 Nomination advancement.Prepares monthly research reports and writes trip reports sharing results of trials and visits with customers.Responsible for coordinating and managing all breeder trials. He/She will schedule with Farm Manager for field and greenhouse space.Coordinates and places trials in major market areas and travel to these areas for evaluation of entries. Coordinates breeder and foundation seed production with Farm Manager and/or Production department.The Senior Plant Breeder will be a key member of the Crop Team. Assists with the development of market and product profiles for assigned crop. He/She will recommend hybrids for advancement. Develops, evaluates and recommends new technologies to assist/improve breeding efforts.Responsible for developing and reviewing relevant performance goals for Breeding Assistant. Manages the assistant breeder including employee training, safety and education programs.Responsible for implementing approved Cooperative Agreements and providing reports, analysis and recommendations.Provides Production department with required amount of disease free Breeder’s seed of parent lines of advancing hybrids along with Inbred (parent) Line Descriptions. Coordinates plant selection for production of quality stock seed.Assists with the writing of a capital budget and assists with the preparation and monitoring of annual project expense budget.Attends professional meetings to represent SAI, promote products, learn and collect information.Other duties as assigned by Director of Research.Follows all SAI quality assurance, policies and procedures as follows but not limited to this list:* Is aware of and personally follows all SAI policies and procedures.* Keeps Director informed of critical tasks not done.* Ensures that all responsibilities are covered during planned absences.* Stays informed and current on labor laws, safety laws, and pesticide laws.* Encourages continual improvement within department.* Ensures enforcement of policies and procedures.* Raises issues with Director when policies or procedures are not clear or not working.* Keeps Manager informed of issues developing. REQUIRED EXPERIENCE/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Must have the developed ability to select for horticultural type. Must have knowledge of aspects of both seed production and commercial crop production. Must possess the ability to develop and implement a vegetable breeding program.Must have the ability to organize and plan effectively and to communicate effectively with personnel within the company, the public, growers, and dealers. Must be able to disseminate information either verbally or through written reports.Must keep abreast of state-of-the-art technology relating to breeding or pathology of assigned species.Must possess the ability to lead, motivate, and supervise assistants, technicians, and part-time labor to achieve objectives as well as the ability to manage resources while implementing a plan and staying on budget. EDUCATION REQUIRED: M.S. degree in plant breeding/genetics, though a M.S. in another scientific discipline or a B.S. degree will be considered if accompanied by at least five (5) years work experience in plant breeding combined with some working knowledge of plant pathology related techniques. LICENSES/DEGREES/TRAINING:Must maintain a valid Washington State Driver’s License and a Commercial Applicator Pesticide license. MATERIALS/EQUIPMENT DIRECTLY USED: May use specialized seed cleaning equipment. WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:Must be able to work with laboratory chemicals, pesticides, and other possible irritating substances.Must be willing to work overtime hours, including some weekends and holidays, as requested.Must be able to work under different weather conditions such as extremes in temperature and must be able to work in dusty conditions. Must be able to wear protective equipment when necessary and/or required (e.g., gloves, respirator, safety glasses, hearing protection)Must be able to drive for long periods of time.Must be able to travel occasionally throughout the year on company related business.
