Senior Quality Control Technician
NATURE OF WORK To conduct testing and experimental research related to bacteriophage for the development of microbial starter cultures and ingredients used in the dairy / food industry. The principal focus of the position is managing and performing activities related to the Madison Phage Technical Service Laboratory which is essential for the optimal performance and development of our microbial starter culture product line. In conjunction, the position, as part of a Global Technical Service Laboratory and R&D team, will in addition, conduct experiments in support of basic research and commercial product development of lactic acid bacterial starter cultures. However, the primary focus of the position is Quality Control rather than research. The successful candidate will have a working knowledge of and standard microbiological methodologies, including microbial and bacteriophage propagation, enumeration and analysis, sufficient to independently perform specific tasks and assist other colleagues. A basic understanding of molecular biology and genomic techniques is essential for research experimental component. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Management and coordination of Phage Technical Service (PTS) Laboratory: Receive and catalogue incoming test samplesOrganize daily schedule, prepare materials and samples for analysesPerform analyses, interpret and record results Prepare and send analysis reports to stakeholdersIndependently manage and coordinate PTS Laboratory activities and integrate with Manager of Global PTS Experimental research Host???bacteriophage interactions as it relates to the applications of microbial culture systems for dairy / food fermentations.Microbiological and genomic characterization of bacteriophage Ensure accurate execution and implementation of experiments, analyzing results, and reporting work results. Serve as a technical resource for Phage Technical Service function and research experimentation as it relates to dairy starter culture systems. WORKING CONDITIONS This position operates in a laboratory and office environment. There may be some exposure to hazardous materials (training is required). Must wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as appropriate in accordance with safety policy. SCOPE OF POSITION The candidate will be a member of the Madison-based Culture Development R&D Group which is part of global team within DuPont Nutrition & Health, Technology & Innovation. In this role, they will be expected to conduct routine analyses and research as part of multifunctional project teams, based on specific business goals as set by the Cultures Division. Direction will come from the Culture Development Team Leader with research activities and responsibilities integrated into the overall global R&D organization. Qualifications:KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES To successfully perform the requirements of this position, the incumbent must be trained in Food Science, Microbiology or related field commensurate to a BS degree with 2+ years of relevant laboratory experience.Knowledge of microbiology, bacterial propagation, bacteriophage, aseptic laboratory technique essentialStrong organizational skills essentialKnowledge of dairy fermentations desirableFundamental understanding of microbial physiology and genetics, in particular with lactic acid bacteria desirable.Familiarity with basic nucleic acid manipulation and analysis (PCR, electrophoresis, sequencing, cloning) desirable.Strong communication (verbal and written), organizational and interpersonal skills.
