Senior Research Associate, Plant Breeding (masters)
DescriptionCome join our team and serve as a vital team member for a comprehensive maize breeding program, supporting inbred development and characterization of the program and evaluation zone. The position will require both field and lab work and provide genotypic, phenotypic, and statistical analysis for the evaluation zone. The candidate will also aid in leading research activities by assisting in planning and effectively conducting experiments and recording and analyzing data. Manage and lead corn breeding experiment planning, execution, data collection, and data analysis activities.Oversee both summer and winter nursery activities, inbred populations, disease screening efforts, and other activities at the research facility with an emphasis on quality work.Lead molecular breeding activities, including experimental design, marker strategy, and resource allocation. Manage submission of DNA marker jobs, quality control, and the resulting data to assist in advancement decisions.Collects, analyzes, and summarizes phenotypic and genotypic information within the breeding program and evaluation zone to support product development and advancement.Assist the research scientist in planning and tracking resource allocations for the breeding program. Leads large projects essential for success of customers, research center, and evaluation zone (e.g. UAS phenotyping, ear photometry, disease screening, MEPS) Organizes, coordinates, and assigns projects to other employees. May recruit, hire, supervise, and evaluate employee performance.
QualificationsMinimum M.S. degree in plant breeding, genetics, statistics, or other relevant majors in the agricultural or biological sciences is required, with a strong background in genetics, molecular breeding, computer science/information management and/or statistics. Two to four (2-4) years of industry related experience is desired. Equivalent amounts of relevant education and experience are also acceptable.
Experience in field-based breeding and molecular breeding in maize or other crops, genetic mapping or genetic data management, experimental design, and statistics is desired.
Strong computer science/information management, data management, and statistical analysis skills are a plus. Candidate needs to be highly proficient in Microsoft Office and other related software for data analysis, database development and maintenance, data storage, and file manipulation. The ability to learn new software will be required. Familiarity with other database management and statistical analysis software desired.
Candidate must have strong self-motivation and ability to initiate projects, set goals, make decisions, and effectively solve problems. Excellent personal interaction skills required for fostering teamwork, enhancing a good working environment, and effectively developing strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people. Strong communication skills in spoken and written English and a proven ability to work well with a wide range of individuals are critical.
