About this job:
Provide specialist scientific,
technical or product expertise and leadership required to design and deliver
work programs defined by a function, project or supervisor
Be responsible for initiating,
evaluating, and implementing changes to established protocols or systems
Use best practices and knowledge to
improve products, process or service
Work in a function and project matrix environment to plan, coordinate and execute plant biology research and development activities
Contribute expertise and knowledge relevant to trait research and characterization
Interact with scientists and technical staff to coordinate and lead trait efficacy testing in growth facilities or in field
Develop innovative methodologies and improve existing process in trait efficacy and plant performance assessment
Lead or participate project teams or work streams contributing greenhouse functional expertise
Maintain accurate experimental records according to company policies with outstanding attention to detail
Protect novel findings through submission of invention disclosure
Monitor environmental conditions and scout plants for diseases and pests, record data such as observations and room locations in database according to company policies
Supervise and mentor other employees within the functional group
Apply pesticides as part of the greenhouse team effort
Occasionally work over the weekends and holidays when needed

Degree in Plant Breeding, Plant Physiology or biological sciences preferred
Knowledge in genetics, plant
breeding, plant physiology, molecular biology, and statistics
Working knowledge of
greenhouse facility, equipment and operations
Ability to identify
plant pests
working with transgenic or regulated materials is desirable
In-depth experience in responding to non-routine situations
and to choose the best solution from a range of options
in use of standard Microsoft office software and databases
technical, professional and personal capabilities
planning and organizing skills
in supervising and coaching junior staff
ability and motivation to work independently
skills such as working with databases, environmental controls, and Microsoft
record keeping skills and demonstrated attention to detail
verbal and written communication skills
to perform all physical aspects required in greenhouse operations
and adherence to stewardship rules related to GM plant materials
All applicants must be
eligible to work in the US
Travel: May require domestic and occasional
international travel to field sites, project meetings, and scientific
Capable of working in high or low
temperature conditions in field or greenhouse. Capable of lifting up to
50 pounds.Capable of working long hours during time-critical periods of
the growing season.
Field, greenhouse, laboratory,
office. Domestic and international travel required with occasional
overnight stays. Stays at off-season production/nursery locations may extend to
two to three weeks. Potential allergens include pollen, fungal spores,
chemical pesticides in the field or greenhouse.
