Senior Research Scientist, Fermentation – Diamond V
Position PurposeThe Senior Research Scientist (Innovation Group) is part of the research and development team responsible for new product development and current product research at Diamond V. This position is responsible for ideating, driving scientific proof of concept studies for new products and providing cross-departmental consultation both within a specific area of expertise (Fermentation) and at a broader project team level. Above average communication skills, technical expertise, and persistence are required to deliver innovative solutions within a continually changing environment.Principal AccountabilitiesManages new and existing laboratory scale fermentation activities and deliverables.?Leads and advises various scientific teams taxed with product and method innovations including chemical and biological assay development.?Develops, adapts and performs formulation, fermentation optimization, prototype bioactivity testing, fermentation scale-up, technology transfer and downstream processing studies.?Develops and utilizes basic and advanced microbiology, chemistry, molecular and biological modeling techniques, and equipment to rank prototypes.Works with others, both internal and external to identify opportunities in alignment with Diamond V research strategy.Leads cross-departmental project teams to move projects through Stage 3 (NPD) proof of concept or (current product) decisions, identifies the next step and maintains management deadlines.??Makes formal presentations of progress or final results to cross-departmental teams, business unit teams, peers at industry conferences and visiting Professors and customers.Reviews scientific literature proposes and applies novel scientific techniques to succeed in priority projects.?Maintains knowledge of current technologies and advancements in fermentation technology by attending training and collaborating with off-site scientists.Prepares internal research reports, first drafts of marketing reports, conference posters and manuscripts as projects are completed.Collaborates with and supports Technical Service, Field Tech, Embria, Production and Regulatory departments on team initiatives.May serve as Co-Investigator or Monitor for in-house or external animal research trials.Maintains a safe and clean work environment.??80% of time spent in laboratory, 10% on literature review and reporting.? Up to 10% of time needed for travel for collaboration, transfer of technologies to other sites or for education. Some evening, weekend and holiday work may be required.Skills:
Required QualificationsMinimum of a M.S. Degree in Life Science field with 10+years laboratory and production research experience in Fermentation OR a PhD in Life Science field with 5+years laboratory and production research experience in FermentationExperience in using fermentation to develop new products or technologies.Applied experience including optimization of yeast and bacterial fermentations, troubleshooting, scale-up, purification and downstream processing required.?Experienced in word and data processing, graphical and statistical software, report generation and delivery of presentations.??Possesses strong initiative, innovative, organizational, troubleshooting and time management skills.Ability to effectively communicate, both verbally and in writing, to all levels of employees and external contacts.Ability to analyze a wide range of intellectual and practical problems, propose reasonable solutions, make logical decisions, carry out decisions, and conduct appropriate follow-up.Meets deadlines and works effectively alone or as part of a team with flexibly under time constraints and with interruptions.Ability to maintain the integrity of highly confidential research and business information.Considerable amount of physical activity including repetitive motion, standing, walking, climbing, reaching, squatting, kneeling, bending, sitting, carrying, pushing, pulling, gripping and twisting as well as extended periods of sedentary work is expected.Requires working with and safely and effectively handling chemicals, biohazards and allergens, which if handled improperly may be a health hazard.Requires lifting up to 20 pounds regularly and up to 50 pounds occasionallyGood vision is required in order to take measurements accurately and read detailed printed materials.Requires above average intellectual ability and good judgment to deal effectively with a wide range of problem solving and trouble shooting activities.Must be able to effectively communicate with manager, coworkers and vendors on a daily basis to maintain a safe and effective work environment.??Preferred QualificationsExperience in design of animal trials is beneficial.
