Senior Scientist II, Isocyanates(1802563) – Wyandotte, MI BASF is a technology-driven, global company dedicated to identifying future growth fields and trends and making products to solve the needs of our customers. Polyurethanes represent a core technology and business area for BASF where chemistry and process engineering play key roles. With this position, we are building the best team in our Wyandotte Technical Center, Wyandotte, MI, in support of our isocyanates business. In this position, the Senior Scientist II will be reporting to the Sr. Manager, Structural Materials & Systems Research NA. She or he will be leading the isocyanates lab in Wyandotte, MI, leading Research & Development initiatives sponsored by the Isocyanates business. Additionally, the lab provides technical support to Performance Materials and Chemical Monomers (Isocyanates). The Senior Scientist II will be responsible for contributing to the development of their technical community and will be a key resource for generating new concepts, ideas and recommendations for future scientific direction. Formula for Success: You Will? – Use your PhD in Organic Chemistry or Polymer Science / Chemistry and 5+ years of experience in the field of thermoset chemistry, preferably within the polyurethanes technology to manage regular lab activities including hands on material R & D projects for isocyanates product development.- Use your strong know-how of recent advances in polyurethanes and isocyanates and understanding of chemical manufacturing processes as well as structure-property relationships of polymers and polymer additives to lead projects and implement strategies that Explore new/advanced technologies in polyurethanes, provide technical direction to isocyanates NBD team, establish goals, prepare and execute project plans .- Lead and develop team of 2 ? 3 associate scientists and/or technicians.- Initiate, review and evaluate new project ideas, prepare project proposals and defend them in gate reviews. You will have a track record of innovations with business impact.- Openly collaborate with colleagues in the Monomers and Performance Materials divisions (new business development, technical service, and innovation management).- Regularly exchange R&D knowledge & new ideas with other isocyanate and polyurethane researchers in the North American technical community (including R&D, tech service, and production), collaborate with our global research colleagues (especially Germany, and China) and external cooperation partners.- Develop and document test methods and procedures for new lab processes. Install lab equipment as necessary.- Provide analytical/characterization service and quality control in support of isocyanates production.- Create product regulatory documents and procedures.- Prepare your own patents in collaboration with the IP team and evaluate third-party patents.- Be responsible for the further development, evolution and advancement of isocyanate expertise through literature research and cooperative initiatives with universities.- Implement and lead safety concepts and ensure accurate lab workflows.- Bring experience in Organic synthesis (ideally related to polyurethanes or isocyanates) and/or Technical Service and/or Quality Control to the table in this dynamic role.- Have an opportunity to apply experience with scaling up chemical processes (previous experience is a plus.)- Have the ability to work proactively on problem solving and independently with minimal supervision/direction.- Utilize personal networking ability and excellent interpersonal skills, good communication and presentation skills, track record of working in a team.- Be willing and able to travel domestically and globally (up to 10% of the time), and work as part of a global research team.- Effectively work with colleagues, university community, external partners and customers throughout various operating divisions and competence centers.
