We are currently seeking a highly motivated and talented microbiologist to join our dynamic and collaborative team to support company goals in probiotic and human nutrition science. The successful candidate will be part of the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group with primary focus to isolate, identify, and characterize traditional and next-generation probiotic strains. This position will be within the DuPont Nutrition and Health division and will work cross-functionally with technical teams involved in upstream research, applications and manufacturing. The successful candidate will be responsible for advancing strain discovery efforts by developing strain isolation and screening pipelines. This role requires strong microbial cultivation skills and expertise with a range of biological assays used to characterize microorganisms. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with a microbiology background who want to bridge natural host-microbe relationships with commercial probiotics to restore and maintain health. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES Develops and implements robust screening pipelines of strains to determine commercial probiotic potential.Develops and conducts in vitro experiments for the functional characterization of strains.Develops novel strain isolation methods from human microbiome samples.Conducts independent research to develop or harmonize new methods and technologies.Maintains thorough documentation of experimental plans, process workflows, and results.Develops project plans in conjunction with Group manager.Prepares results for presentation, inclusion in technical reports, and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.Stays current in microbial cultivation and phenotyping methods by keeping up with relevant literature and attending scientific meetings.Serves as a subject matter expert, resource, and mentor to biologists, bioinformaticians, and key stakeholders across the company SCOPE OF POSITION The incumbent will be a member of the Madison-based R&D group, specifically the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group. In this role, they will be expected to conduct independent research as part of multifunctional project teams, based on specific business goals as set by the Health & Protection leadership. As needed, the individual will be expected to lead projects and project teams. Direction will come from the Genomics and Microbiome Sciences Group manager. Research activities and responsibilities will be integrated into the overall global Technology as part of Health & Protection within Nutrition and Health. The primary objective is to characterize probiotic qualities of DuPont industrial strains, which consists mostly of lactic acid bacteria and bifidobacteria. These activities will further understandings of probiotic health benefits, probiotic strain safety and diversity, and probiotic mode-of-action. A secondary objective is to drive the development of a pipeline for strain discovery, which includes isolating, identifying, and screening new microbial strains for use as probiotics. Isolation of novel microbes and comprehensive characterization of candidate strains are the foundation to developing new probiotics and health claims. It is expected that the incumbent will master specific technical skills commensurate with modern microbiology that include cultivation and functional assays sufficiently to independently perform such work and instruct others as well. WORK CONDITIONS Operates in an office / laboratory environment. Full time, 40-hr per week. Some travel expected. Qualifications:Trained in Microbiology, Cell Biology, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, or related field with an emphasis in bacterial cultivation, microbial physiology, and screening assays.Position requires a PhD or MSc designation,Experience in isolating and cultivating diverse bacteria from complex communities, including anaerobic species. Experience with human microbiome genera and BSL2 manipulation is highly desirable.Strong understanding of bacterial physiology, growth and fermentation under various media and conditions. Demonstrated experience in developing high throughput assays for strain screening, including: carbon and nutrient utilization, cell adhesion, competitive exclusion, etc.Basic knowledge and experience with molecular biology methods; primer design, DNA/RNA isolation, PCR.Strong publication record.Demonstrated ability to independently design, manage, and perform multi-task projects to a successful result.Must be a team player and a focused individual with a strong work ethic and great attention to detail.Experience in project management; planning, tracking and reporting, desirable.Possess excellent oral and written communication skills for presentation of scientific concepts and results to internal and external customers.Compliance with all company policies is required.
