Senior Separations Scientist, Process Chromatography ? Decatur, ILResearch & DevelopmentThis is an exempt level position. Position Summary:The Senior Scientist will be expected to be an expert in industrial chromatography, including various simulated moving bed chromatography techniques (SMB, ISBM, SSMB) and ion exchange chromatography.
In this position, the Senior Scientist will be responsible for leading the discovery, development and scale up of new SMB processes as well as working with Operations on troubleshooting and improving current chromatographic processes.
The Scientist will be expected to effectively work with external technology providers and across various internal groups including operations, business development and R&D.
In addition, the Senior Scientist will support the development of other downstream separation processes including membrane filtration, crystallizations, and/or liquid/solids separations.
Job Responsibilities: Lead R&D in the discovery, development and scale up of new chromatographic separation processSupport Operations in troubleshooting and optimizing current chromatographic processesLead chromatographic research with external partnersIdentify and evaluate new technologies for chromatographyDesign and run experiments including the selection of sampling procedures, analytical methods and some routine analytical analysisDesign, set up, operate and maintain lab and pilot equipmentMaintain housekeeping and observe safety standards in lab and pilot plantConsolidate, interpret and present data/conclusions/recommendations in both written and oral formatsWork within a diverse team to evaluate, develop and transfer processes to productionPotential to manage technicians and scientists Job Requirements: Bachelor?s degree is required in a technical field (chemistry or chemical engineering preferred), advanced technical degree is preferredMinimum of ten years of experience in the development and scale up of industrial chromatographic processes is required
Prior experience working with external vendors to evaluate and implement new technologyStrong technical background with various lab and pilot equipment and instrumentationFamiliarity with other standard downstream unit operations, e.g. membrane filtration, crystallization distillation, etc.Excellent interpersonal and communication skillsStrong understanding of chemistry, math, physics, biology, materials, and design principlesSkilled with basic piping and mechanical procedures and knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipmentAbility to travel 10-20% of timeAbility to handle moderately heavy tools and materials, e.g. pipe wrenches, five gallon buckets, and hand-carting 55 gallon drumsCore Competencies include: Communication, curiosity, adaptability, integrity, mechanical aptitude, problem solving, independent judgment, teamwork, dependability, persistent, patient, detail oriented and safety commitment
