Decatur, ILThis is an exempt level position Position Summary:The R&D Scientist will be expected to be an in house expert in various crystallization operations.
The Scientist will be responsible for developing crystallization processes through both internal work and external partnership, leading the technical transfer of new processes from the lab to production, and supporting plant operations in improving/troubleshooting current crystallization processes.
In addition, the R&D Scientist may support the development of other downstream separation processes including simulated moving bed chromatography, membrane filtration, ion exchange, and/or liquid/solids separations.
The Scientist will be expected to work across various groups including operations, business development and R&D.
A minimum of a Bachelor?s degree in a technical field (chemistry or chemical engineering preferred) and 10+ years of experience in the development and scale up of crystallization processes, preferably with carbohydrates, is required.
Advanced technical degrees will be beneficial.Key roles: Build in house crystallization development capabilities.Development and technical transfer of robust crystallization processes to production environment.Lead crystallization research with external partners.Work with plant operations on both troubleshooting and continuous improvement efforts.Support the development of other separation processes including simulated moving bed chromatography, membrane filtration, ion exchange, and/or liquid/solids separations.Design and run experiments including the selection of sampling procedures, analytical methods and some routine analytical analysis.Identify and evaluate new technologies for crystallizations.Design, set up, operate and maintain lab and pilot equipment.Maintain housekeeping and observe safety standards in lab and pilot plant. Consolidate, interpret and present data/conclusions/recommendations in both written and oral formats.Work within a diverse team to evaluate, develop and transfer processes to production. Advanced technical degrees will be beneficial.10+ years of relevant experience preferably in the area of carbohydrates. Prior experience directing research with external partners. Strong technical background with various lab and pilot equipment and instrumentation.Familiarity with other standard downstream unit operations, e.g. chromatography, filtration, distillation, etc.Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.Understanding of chemistry, math, physics, biology, materials, and design principles.Skilled with basic piping and mechanical procedures and knowledge of mechanical and electrical equipment.Ability to travel 10-20% of time.
Physical requirements:Ability to handle moderately heavy tools and materials, e.g. pipe wrenches, five gallon buckets, and hand-carting 55 gallon drums.
