Sow Farm Unit Manager

JOB TITLE:          Sow Farm Unit ManagerREPORTS TO:      Production SupervisorSUPERVISES:       All employees and vendors at the unit                DATE:  September 2013 Position Summary:  Responsible for daily management of all assigned location assets for maximized production and profitability through efficient utilization of animals, facilities, vendors, and staff as well as being the gate keeper of biosecurity, welfare, safety, and audit compliance adherence. Principal Duties and Responsibilities:Manages all daily activities/processes related to iso-wean pig production, in accordance with protocols and procedures established by Management.Manages financial performance by working towards established goals, controlling costs and adhering to previously set budgets.Develops employees by leading, planning, managing, coaching and mentoring.Establishes and maintains open communication with all farm staff, production supervisor, shareholders, veterinarian and management team.Manages and administers personnel-related functions, such as performance reviews, attendance reporting, vacation/sick leave, disciplinary actions, etc.Ensures that the farm working environment is safe, by providing safety equipment, training and taking necessary actions to prevent hazardous conditions.Schedules and prioritizes workload with daily and weekly task sheets.Monitors and maintains appropriate ventilation and room environments.Responsible for timely and accurate reporting of records. (i.e. feed, culls, BarnVista, etc.)Responsible for oversight of on-site vendor activity (i.e. manure removal, maintenance, mowing)Responsible for farm maintenance and cleanliness.Regular and routine communication with Production Supervisor.Responsible for daily Biosecurity policies and procedures. Additional Duties and Responsibilities:Regular, consistent attendance is essential to the function of this position. Work every other weekend and part of holiday rotation.Follows all bio-security measures.Follows all Animal Welfare policies and practices and informs management of any violations.Follows all safety rules and practices and encourages staff to do the same.Responsible to train and direct staff to keep areas clean and organized.Responsible for attendance at scheduled meetings and events.Other duties as may be assigned to fulfill responsibilities of this position/barn.Accurately orders supplies and meds.Conducts interviews for new hires. Skills and Abilities:Work effectively and proactively with a variety of personalities.Work effectively, calmly and respectfully with live animals.Ability to be a team player and assist other areas as needed.Must have strong cleanliness habits at all times.Detailed and organized.Proficiency in basic math skills and computer. Working Conditions:  Work is performed almost exclusively in a hog confinement in rural areas.  Hours of work will generally be during regular business hours and alternate weekends.  Hours average 48 hours per week.  There will be some variation in work hours due to animal care and health, weather, employee shift schedules, special projects, and other concerns.  Noise levels that require hearing protection in some areas. Physical Requirements:Standing, walking and ability to be on feet while on concrete 8 to 10 hours per day. Frequent lifting of objects weighing 3-50 poundsFrequent bending, reaching, squatting, stooping, and kneeling. Frequent use of one or both hands/arms to grasp, push, pull.Ability to climb ladder approximately feet 15-25 feet in elevation.Occasional bending while lifting/pulling 50 pounds to 100 pounds of force to move an object with or without the assistance of another person.Ability to communication effectively verbally and in writing.Must be able to print and/or write legibly. Equipment/Instruments Used:  Syringes, needles, power washers, scalpel, feed scoop, sort panels, disinfecting chemicals, computer, fax machines, hand held computers, personal protection equipment such as goggles, ear protection and face shields. Experience:  2+ years of Livestock Experience with High School Diploma/GED Preferred. Trainings:  PQA+ and TQA certified, Biweekly Safety Trainings, Annual Sexual Harassment Training, Group Farrowing Training Additional Requirements:  Must have reliable method of transportation to get to work timely as well as attend company functions and activities as requested.  Company will reimburse for expenses at the established government rate for job specific personal vehicle use. Acknowledgement:  This job description describes the general nature and level of work performed by employee assigned to this position.  It does not state or imply that these are the only duties and responsibilities assigned to the job.  The employee may be required to perform other job-related duties as requested by a member of the Management Team.  All requirements are subject to change over time and possible modifications to reasonably accommodate individuals with a disability.
