For more information about us please visit http://www.syngenta.com/.PurposeResponsible for leading the growing of plant material requested for marketing and retail special events and the production of other core crops as assigned by R&D Flowers Breeding at the Syngenta Flowers site in Gilroy, CA.AccountabilitiesLead all activities related to the growing of special-event plants and assigned R&D core crops at the Syngenta Flowers, Home and Garden R&D facility. The end result will be aligned with the pre-set quality specifications as set by the (internal) client.Work with Marketing, Retail, and R&D to develop crop schedules, production plans, and to order plant material needed for special retail and market events.Oversee the planting, production, cultivation, monitoring, execution, irrigation, chemical applications, etc. of plant material requested by internal clients.Communicate status of crop production requested for special events and breedingSolve production problems and deliver optimal crop growing conditions with a focus producing the highest-quality plants possible.Contribute and update Syngenta grower protocols and integrate hands on growing experience into the grower protocolsProvide knowledge exchange with the commercial business, Sales, Technical, Marketing, Operations & R&D to ensure we are recommending the latest growing information to customersProgram climate set points in the greenhouse environmental control (temperature, humidity, day length and assimilation lighting).Proactively monitor and scout plants for early detection of insects, diseases, and viruses.Ensure all phytosanitary protocols are followed and enforced.Develop an integrated pest management strategy for the production of floriculture crops.Together with the Breeding Team, conduct cultivation evaluations and make sure that improvements and findings from those evaluations are being included in the growing protocols.Give technical cultivation input at relevant internal meetings in order to optimize cultivation techniquesMake suggestions on renewal (quality) improvements, hygiene, efficiency (LEAN) and capacity adjustment (equipment, manpower) for production of breeding crops.Create a weekly work schedule based on the information from the crop production plans, Breeders, and Crop Specialists, so that work can be performed in a quick and efficient manner.Guide the Process Leaders and employees in the specific department in cultivation activities, so that the work is carried out in a proper technical way.Perform internal culture trials which support the design or improvement of growing protocolsMaintain room for exploration and out of the box ideas and thinking Qualifications Experience required for the jobMinimum 5-10 years commercial greenhouse growing experience with ornamental flowering cropsCapable of developing production plans that ensure success for growersExperience training others and communicating technical informationPreferred experience with growing premium flowering plants for special events or saleBS degree in Horticulture, Floriculture, Plant Science or related field Critical technical, professional and personal capabilities:Ability to translate technical solutions to customers and stakeholdersInterpersonal skills and communication skills.
