Vegetable Discovery Breeding Intern – #01SBM
Interns on the Vegetable Discovery team in Woodland, California get hands-on experience in the application of genetic data to improve the practice of plant breeding. A defined research project will be assigned and completed under the guidance of a Discovery supervisor. Interns will have the opportunity to work closely with other related functions such as pathology, marker development, plant breeding, seed production, and high-throughput laboratories, which will provide a broad overview of the career opportunities available at Monsanto. Dates for this 3-month full time summer internship are flexible, and will take place between late spring and late summer???based on the candidate???s availability (semester or quarter calendar).Responsibilities/Learning Experience:Interns are assigned to supervisors who outline general responsibilities, assist in project assignment and completion, and arrange opportunities to visit other functions. Projects will provide exposure to breeding trials, as well as genetic analysis of vegetable traits, which may include analysis of genotyping and/or phenotyping data, genomic analysis, and genetic mapping. Successful candidates will work both independently and in collaboration with other teams, and provide thoughtful analysis to their assigned research project. At the conclusion of the program, interns will present the results of the research project to an audience of peers and scientists. In addition, as part of their assignment, feedback on the program and research project will be requested throughout the internship experience.Qualifications:Required:Currently enrolled at a university within the U.S. pursuing a PhD degree in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Crop Science, Agronomy, Horticulture or related field of study Detail and results-oriented individual with the ability to work independently and in team settings Self-motivated, strong organizational skills and problem-solving abilities Excellent interpersonal and communication skillsMust be returning to school to continue program of study upon completion of this summer internship Preferred:Experience in statistical analysis and field experimental design.Experience in quantitative genetics; analysis of field trials, combining ability, breeding values.Experience in marker assisted selection and genomic selection.Familiar with analysis of molecular marker data for linkage and QTL mappingApply for this job.
