Job Responsibilities:As the leader of the Animal Resources group in an AAALAC-accredited, GLP-compliant facility, the incumbent will be responsible for the oversight of staff and the daily care and husbandry of the rodent populations. The duties include, but are not limited to the following: Supervise Laboratory Animal Resources staffSchedule/resource the animal care/husbandry workload across all competency groupsMaintain and project vivarium supply inventories needsConduct vivarium tours as needed to internal and external guests (including AAALAC inspectors, Sponsors, and regulatory authorities such as DNREC)Maintain vivarium facility/physical plant in accordance with AAALAC and Good Laboratory Practice standardsParticipate in AAALAC and related animal care program and facility inspectionsCoordinate vivarium preventative maintenance schedules and facility projectsOverall responsibility for the review and compliance of animal drinking water, serology, microbial monitoring, and feed/bedding analysis reports. In addition to the responsibilities described above, the incumbent will also be responsible for maintaining proficiency for all staff techniques and procedures to enable training as well as support for times of peak demand. Observing animal condition and behaviorPerform daily checks for temperature, humidity, food, and waterMaintaining sanitary conditions (i.e scrub and mop animal room floors)Change animal cagesWork in the cage wash areaInventory supply stockPrepare cages and cage racksRemove trash for incinerationCollect wastes for autoclaving and disposalReceive new animalsRecord animal health concerns per SOP and/or specified protocolsOrder animals, update and maintain animal recordsCollect, package, and send out serology tissues for animal health monitoringMix test diets, fill jars with feed incorporated with test substanceAssist with any needed animal handling proceduresQualificationsHigh school DiplomaAt least four years of animal care and handling in a laboratory or similar environment requiredMust be able to work independently as well as part of a team environment.Must have ability to work flexible work schedules to meet workload demandsGood leadership, communication, and prioritization skills.
